BOOMTOWN RATS 2005,
By G. V. Best "gvb" (birmingham, west mids United Kingdom) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)

IINFLUENCES INCLUDED SPRINGSTEEN, THIN LIZZY AND VAN MORRISON.THIS BECAME ONE OF MY FAVOURITE ALBUMS OF THE YEAR AND AN ALL TIME CLASSIC. IT IS GOOD TO SEE 4 UNRELEASED DEMOS INCLUDED PLUS THE LIVE VERSION OF BAREFOOTIN' FROM THE LOOKIN' AFTER NUMBER ONE 12" SINGLE. ALTHOUGH WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO BORN TO BURN THE 7" B SIDE? WHY HAS THE B SIDE OF MARY OF THE FOURTH FORM - DO THE RAT - BEEN INCLUDED ON THE NEW VERSION OF TONIC FOR THE TROOPS? AS USUAL A GREAT REISSUE IS LET DOWN BY IMPORTANT OMISSIONS. THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN A FIVE STAR ALBUM.

Great to have it on CD at last but ...,

... there are two problems. First, you'll notice that the running order is not that of the original LP. Secondly, these is a really off-putting flaw at the beginning of "I Can Make It If You Can".Those issues aside, this is a very good album. Whilst it reveals the influence of such as Bruce Springsteen, the Rats showed that they were more than imitators, delivering their own back to grass roots approach, mostly through Saint Bob's lyrics. And in it's original order, I'd say that the second side of this is one of the best sides of music ever released.

The Rats prove that they're a great singles band,
By D. J. H. Thorn "davethorn13" (Hull, UK) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)

I have to agree with the comments that The Boomtown Rats lacked a clear musical identity. Bob Geldof has admitted that the band were heavily R&B-influenced, to the extent that their live set once consisted of Dr Feelgood's debut album. The bonus tracks here, significantly pre-Sex Pistols, reinforce the idea that they were a surrogate Rolling Stones. Yet there's no doubt that they played up to the punk tag. I too wonder where the b-side "Born To Burn" is. This and their first few singles fit the punk bill. Indeed, the main attraction of this album is those first two singles, "Lookin' After No. 1" and "Mary Of The 4th Form". Most of the album captures a band rippling with energy but struggling for material of outstanding quality. Worth a listen though.
