One of Barry's most sought after soundtracks finally receives a CD release from Harkit much to the chagrin of our US counterparts who seem intent on casting aspersions as to it's legitimacy - fortunately US copyright laws do not extend into Europe. Intrada, who brought us Barry's sumptuous `Mary Queen Of Scots', apparently planned to release Boom but could not locate the master tapes. So Harkit has stepped up to the mark with this vinyl transfer. The movie itself, based on Tennesse Williams `The Milk Train Doesn't Stop Here Anymore' and starring Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor and directed by the brilliant Joseph Losey was loathed by critics and audience alike. The lavish, often ridiculous costuming - a vintage Liz Taylor performance which some unkind critics have likened to a drag artist and the appearance of Noel Coward as `The Witch Of Capri' has made `Boom' a must see camp classic. The soundtrack, however, is one of Barry's golden scores and can stand side by side with `The Tamarind Seed', `Follow Me' and the previously mentioned `Mary Queen Of Scots.' The only weak spot here is the Don Black / Johnny Dankworth composition `Hideaway' sung by Georgie Fame. Thankfully it appears as the last track so Barry's music can be listened to uniterrupted. Great notes by Kimberly Lindbergs (of Cinebeats - Confessions Of A Cinephile).
