What makes it especially valuable is that Rashid's priorities are very different from those of most Western observers.' - Tariq Ali 'Ahmed Rashid writes concisely, keeping up a rapid pace starting with the historical background of the region, looking in turn at its five republics - Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan - and finally at their common interests and rivalries... Ahmed Rashid, is the best author I know when it comes to central Asian affairs and history. He was born in Lahore, Pakistan; and is a prize winning journalist, analyst, and author. Due to his work, he has a price on his head to this very day.

This book here, is the very first book Mr Rashid has written. It goes over everything from history, to extremism, to everyday life inside the central Asian countries.

Great book for students of: International Studies/Relations.
