The Books of the South continues Glan Cook's chronicles of the Black Company, with the first two books in this compilation covering Croaker and co. as they travel south to Khatovar, to return the compamy chronicles to the birthplace of the Black Company.

Of course, things rapidly begin to go wrong, and several major villans from the North turn out to be not so dead after all...

The first two books are good and develop the relationship between Croaker and the Lady nicely. Cook's writing style does not change and is low on description but high on action. Some people like this, some people hate it. BE WARNED however - book two ends on a doozy of a cliffhanger and book three in this set is actually a standalone novel that does nothing to resolve it, instead concentrating on events in the north after Croaker departs.

At the time of writing, getting hold of the next set of books (Glittering Stone, starting with Bleak Seasons) is hard and expensive - hopefully they will also be reissued, and soon!

I read 'Books of the South' some few years ago. Then I was (obviously) younger and not happy about the reversal of the fortunes of the Company, Croaker, the Lady etc.. Now, having bought the 'Chronicles' and 'Books of the South' in single volumes I am greatly enjoying reading these books again. One thing is sure in the world of 'Books of the South' and that is uncertainty. Even decapitation or impalement does not stop certain persons - but no spoilers. If you enjoy a story where there are no white hat heroes, only villains of various hues, little honour but much treachery and deception, and a well crafted plot with more twists than a paranoid corkscrew, read this.

If you enjoyed the books of the North you will enjoy these, simple as :)

First two books follow Croaker, Lady & co as they journey south.. I wont spoil it in any way except to say - buy the next lot of books so as to have them ready since as previously mentioned, when book two ends, you WILL want to follow what happens next :)

However dont get so keen as you skip the third book 'Silver Spike', which follows Ravens path after the events of the first book, a really really good read, on par with, if not better than the previous two. Silent & Raven are two great characters and this book concludes their story. Also a favourite taken of mine makes an appearance, more evil, crazy and destructive than ever, only thing that hasnt changed is this takens bad luck! - do not skip this just to get back to Croaker & co faster.
