Product Description

Books, Movies, Rhythm, Blues by Nick Hornby - a collection of writing about film, music and books

Books, Movies, Rhythm, Blues is the companion volume to Fan Mail, Nick Hornby's collection of writings on football. This second collection brings together the best of his other non-fiction pieces, on film and tv, writers and painters and music, and including one exceptional fragment of autobiography. With subject matter ranging from the Sundance Festival to Abbey Road Studios, from P.G. Wodehouse to The West Wing, these are pieces that 'were written for fun, or because I felt I had things to say and time to say them, or because the commissions were unusual and imaginative, or because ... I was being asked to go somewhere I had never been before.'

This Penguin Special, available exclusively as an ebook, can be read in two hours or less. It will be loved by readers of High Fidelity and About a Boy, as well as fans of Hornby everywhere.

Nick Hornby has captivated readers and achieved widespread critical acclaim for his comic, well-observed novels About a Boy, High Fidelity, How to be Good, A Long Way Down (shortlisted for the Whitbread Award), Slam and Juliet, Naked. His four additional works of non-fiction, Fever Pitch, 31 Songs (shortlisted for the National Book Critics Circle Award), The Complete Polysyllabic Spree and Pray are also available from Penguin.

Nick could write just about anything, and I would enjoy reading it. He is my favorite contemporary author..... hands down.
3.0 out of 5 stars trifles, puddles and flotsam 7 July 2014

Slight, topical, dated. Sorry NH. Don't bother buying this - Hornby is a strong writer but this stuff is lightweight autobiography for the most part- a failure in four page increments.
3.0 out of 5 stars I Enjoy a Good Collection of Essays 10 Jun 2014
By HuntleyMC - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A good collection of essays covering music, literature, screenwriting, producing and promoting a movie, writing when the author has no idea what to write.
The last essay titled "London" was enjoyable as Hornby compared the London of his youth with the London he currently lives with the London of Charles Dickens's London two hundred years before. As Hornby points out it is amazing to think that many of the homes current Londoners live in existed during Dickens time.
The collection of essays is enjoyable to read but as an American some of the topics discussed fly over my head. If I was read for any other reason than pleasure I would Google or visit Wikipedia somethings to have a clearer idea.

Hornby never gets old. He remains funny and his love of writing shines through his work. Great essays to dip in and out of. I really enjoyed "The Crying Game" essay. Buy as an e-book.

If you don't know Nick Hornby, this is a good introduction to his style and talent. And, if you do, you will very much enjoy his thoughts on a wide range of subjects. His fiction work is also well worth your time. He is an original thinker and writer.
