Product Description

Product Description

Poets and playwrights, novels and novelists, publishing coups and personal stories, literature as we know it has been shaped by the key exponents of the craft, quirks of fate, meetings, love affairs and moments of despair and death. Characters such as Atticus Finch, Lily Bart, and Harry Potter have carried us through the century, while the discussion still rages on about the Da Vinci Code. Here is the world of literature in a nutshell, each vital and intriguing moment placed in it's historic and cultural context creating an intelligent, accessible guide to the writings of the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very informative , beautifully produced, 9 Oct 2007
This review is from: Books: Over a Century of the Greatest Books, Writers, Characters, Passages and Events That Rocked the Literary World (Little Black Book) (Paperback)
Beautifully produced and illustrated , I find it hard to categorise this book . The hundreds of entries are so attractively presented and lavishly illustrated that it is obviously produced for a general readership . But I also think it works on an academic level and it was that reason that I bought two copies , one for myself and one for my niece who is embarking on an Englsih literature degree . I thought that as a source of reference for her on all those writers , books and events which she has not ( as yet ) heard of it would be ideal . But I will approach it at a different level - and intend to dip in and look-up rather than read from cover to cover , and I expect it to give me many months (and probably years ) of interest and enlightenment. It covers 100 years of modern world literature and no matter how savvy you think you are on this subject there are so many unknown facts to discover .
The illustrations too are lavish and unusual ( I had no idea what Ezra Pound and Zelda Fitzgerald looked like.)An excellent piece of work . Thoroughly recommended

4.0 out of 5 stars Rediscovering Reading!, 5 Oct 2007

This review is from: Books: Over a Century of the Greatest Books, Writers, Characters, Passages and Events That Rocked the Literary World (Little Black Book) (Paperback)
The Little Black Book of Books could have been written just for me! I always feel overwhelmed when I walk into a bookshop or a library. Do I choose something improving or fun, contemporary or classic? What are the key authors I should have read and why are they so significant?

This book is like a fun twist on the approved reading lists you used to get at school. Chopping the last century (plus a few years either side) into manageable chunks, this guide picks out key books, authors, passages, events and characters. The punchy reviews provide you with just enough detail to whet your appetite for the book -if it's one you've not read before - or to set you off reminiscing about or reassessing those already on your bookshelf. It is one for dipping into if you are stumped for something to read but its good index and structure would make it an good addition to your usual literary reference books.

Would make an excellent present for book lovers.
