While searching the Cunard archive in the University of Liverpool for material for The Maritime Quest, the historical exhibition on board QM2, London design company The Open Agency discovered two strikingly illustrated Books of Comparisons. These were published to commemorate the maiden voyages of the Mauretania and the Lusitania, and of the Queen Mary respectively. The discovery inspired them to create this book to honour the first liner of the 21st century in the same tradition.
The illustrations have been commissioned from Andrew Davidson, who was brought up in the West of Scotland and visited the QE2 as she was being fitted out in Clydebank. Since graduating from the Royal College of Art in 1981 he has worked as a freelance graphic designer and illustrator from clients ranging from Oxford University to Forth Ports plc. He has won three Design and Art Direction awards for illustrating 'The Iron Man' by Poet Laureate Ted Hughes, for designing inn signs for a major brewery and for a stamp issued by Royal Mail to commemorate the Millennium.
The text has been compiled by Elspeth Wills who also knew the Clyde from childhood and attended the launch of QE2. After graduating with an honours degree in history from the University of St Andrews, she has spent her career as a researcher, interpreter and author. She has been a major contributor to The Maritime Quest
