I this book is written much more for a US reader than a UK reader. Obviously it still contains theory that is pertinent to accounting needs everywhere but you have to get thru a lot of US stuff to get to it (everything is in dollars, and set up for how accounts are done in the US - confusing for those new to bookeeping). Obviously Tax in the UK is different to the US.., but it spends a lot of time talking about this. Terminology used is very US too, again, confusing to someone new to bookeeping.

I also found it frustrating that a lot of the first entries in the book relate to the difference between accrual and cash accounting methods. As far as I am aware Cash methods are never used but it spends a lot of time (and gives u exercises to do on both methods) on these methods rather than just telling u how to do the one method. Again I think this could be confusing to a person new to bookeeping.

I have returned the book and bought Frank Wood's Book-keeping and Accounts instead who is a well known UK bookeeping/accounts author . Its much more professionally written, less confusing and takes u through the syllabus for both OCR, IAB and AAT exams.

If you are considering running a small business, or are doing so now and struggling with the bookkeeping, then this is the book for you. It explains a huge range of business accounting subjects, augmented by exercises for you to work through to ensure you understand what you have learned, and can use it in practice. This last stage is crucial in making the knowledge stick. It provides an impressive amount of detail throughout, and backs it up with plenty of examples.

Many business-related "For Dummies" books are focussed on America. They go on about federal taxes, state regulations, trading with Canada, and so on, all of which is irrelevant to the UK. Thankfully, this one is very much about UK business. Its choice of fonts does mean it uses a rather whacky pound sign, but it is written in British English, and that's a definite plus. I am not a huge fan of "For Dummies" books, but I do like this one. It is informative, extensive, thorough, it gets on with it, and is well worth the money.

I'm doing an accounting course, and was struggling with my text books, which aren't very user friendly I find. I just felt I needed more practical tasks to help me with my learning, and this seemed perfect. I love the way the 'Dummies' series works, it really seems to get the information fixed in your head more, and this book has plenty of exercises to help with this too. Things seem much easier now - if I pass the course, it will be down to this book!
