Very good. 7 Jan 2012
Format:Paperback
A very good book.
I read Sage for Dummies first by the same author which the two go together very well.

Only problem I had with the current book is that it plugs Sage way too much. Obviously Sage put money up for this and the Sage for Dummies book but it gets plugged way too much.
This book says "Sage Instant" (the cheaper one) is arguably best for a new small business and then goes on in this and the other Sage for dummies that "Sage 50" is the best saying "I bet you hoped you'd spent more money".

Another criticism is it says about DRs and CRs saying they work in a mystical way - they don't! DRs = bring something into an a/c; CRs = taking somethign away from an a/c and if it's a creditor a/c a CR will add to it (like minusing it) and a DR will reduce it (paying it back so again bringing something to it!). I'd suggest you read Business for Advanced GNVQ (Stanley Thornes GNVQ) ISBN 0748735062 which explains this better, although the current title I'm reviewing explains how accounts work in practice much better in all the other areas.

Other than that it the current title really did clear a lot of stuff up in my mind, particularly the use of journals (or the Big Four Journals - Sales, Purchase, cash payments and cash receipts journal) and it was worth it just for that. It was really good at explaining Charts of Accounts. This would be an excellent read for say someone on a year 2 or year 3 of an accountancy degree since it really shows that how these concepts come together in the real world. Obviously it's good for someone learning bookkeeping at college of an entrepreneur who wants to learn more on the topic.

Good read - it's given me lots of ideas for further reading and practical applications.

Each chapter of books for dummies, is really clearly explained. Good thing is as well, that you can always come back to each chapter separately. Great book :)

I thought I'd brush up on my bookkeeping skills and I had a browse through this book at a bookshop and I thought it could be helpful. I've only just started looking through it, but it has all the information that I need. I am looking forward to reaping the benefits of effective bookkeeping.
