Product Description

Product Description

This practical guide teaches small business owners how to keep the books and prepare accounts. The accounts included follow the layout of the new Inland Revenue self-assessment tax return (effective April 1997) and are based on examples from real business owners.

From the Author

Book-keeping for business owners - not accountants!
This book was written because most guides to book-keeping, even those aimed at small businesses, describe a complex system of formal double-entry book-keeping. The system described in this book is the one that most accountants advise small businesses to use; an 'analysed cash book'. If you can read your bank statement, you can understand this way of keeping accounts.

This book is a breath of fresh air for a small or new business wanting help with their accounting records.

Most reference books are full of "double entry", "journals" etc, and some are geared only towards students.

This book is very practically based, not academic, and will be of real interest and help to small business owners who simply want to comply with the book-keeping requirements laid down by law.

If you are a student, or wish to know the "proper" way of accounting - i.e. double entry principles, don't buy this book - however, if you want practical, down to earth help on how to do your "books", it is excellent value for money and probably the best book of it's kind that I have seen.

Good clear no fuss bookkeeping system for the sole proprietor with useful examples of books from a shopkeeper, taxi driver and builder. Note however that "it is NOT suitable for use by limited companies, even when the only shareholder is the only director" and is problematic if you have more than one bank account or a lot of orders/purchases on credit. Best for VERY small businesses.

Being new to book-keeping for a small business this book has become my bible and i found it really easy to follow. As i did not want to follow the double entry style of book-keeping this book keeps it simple and concise.
Money well spent...
