How to "let" a client find you, 18 Sep 2006
This review is from: Book Yourself Solid: The Fastest, Easiest, and Most Reliable System for Getting More Clients Than You Can Handle Even If You Hate Marketing and Selling (Hardcover)
The owners and employees of client-based businesses often end up doing it all, providing the service or product, managing the office, and handling sales and marketing - often the entrepreneur's least favorite chore. Now, you can learn to love it or at least to do it well with less pain. Author Michael Port cites many applicable marketing activities that you probably already know about, but he pulls them together in an organized manner supported by lists of questions and answers. He begins with the foundation of your business, including your motivation and area of specialization. Then he teaches you how to build credibility with clients. Next, he covers marketing and outreach, including tactics for promoting yourself. The book's concepts are easy to grasp and implement, including advice for conquering online marketing. You may already be carrying out some of these strategies, but this book can take you to the next level. We recommend it to those who want new clients badly enough to make sales and marketing a regular part of their jobs for a few hours a week. If you are a new entrepreneur, this resource will help you learn the art of rainmaking.

Excellent Advice on Selecting Clients; Weak on Marketing and Sales, 24 April 2006
This review is from: Book Yourself Solid: The Fastest, Easiest, and Most Reliable System for Getting More Clients Than You Can Handle Even If You Hate Marketing and Selling (Hardcover)
Whenever I work with entrepreneurs, one of my first tasks is to have the budding billionaires come to grips with those they would love to help . . . and those who give them migraines. Pick the first group as your target and good things follow. Pick the latter, and well, you'll wish you were in some other line of work.
Clearly, Mr. Port has learned that lesson and he does a masterful job of helping the reader identify what kinds of clients to go after. I don't believe I've ever seen as good a description of how to go through this process anywhere else.
You can capture those lessons from chapter one about creating a red velvet rope policy (referring to those ropes that doormen at clubs use to keep out those who won't help the club's image).
From there, unfortunately, the book goes downhill. People without a background in marketing (most professionals . . . those who will be reading this book) will begin to flounder with the injunction to figure out why people buy what you are selling. You are told to look to their urgent needs and compelling desires. There are examples, which are fine, but the process will seem opaque to most.
By the time readers arrive at the sales cycle process, they will have mostly gone off the track. It's too bad. With more care to teach the marketing and sales cycle sections, this could have been an outstanding book. As it is, Mr. Port clearly demonstrates a good understanding of the subject. He just isn't as good as he needs to be at explaining what he means.

Excellent book! I wish I read it when I first set up my business. It puts all the bits of the marketing strategy puzzle together in a logic and not threatening way. I read this book in an afternoon and I could not put it down. I went from "wow" to "aaahhhh" moments. I like the style and the method, which is based on being yourself, the red velvet rope and keeping focused. Fantastic tips and useful advice, from web designers to CRM. Buy it now! I am looking forward to implementing my marketing strategy and I am confident it is going to be amazing and successful. Thanks Michael, great work!
