This book is a Masterclass in producing a perfect book. It is also a masterclass in explaining often complicated ideas in a way that it is incredibly easy to understand and follow.

This book is effective and useful because it is written by two renowned designers passing on the expertise they have learned over years of creating successful book designs. Their book never suggest that theirs is the ONLY way to design a book; rather it tells you how to produce real books that publishers can publish with success and readers can read with pleasure.

Unlike many forms of art, book design is not an ego-centred activity. Good book design provides a mean of communicating the ideas and concepts of others. Often the most effective design is unobtrusive, allowing the author to speak rather than loudly proclaiming the designer's exceptional talent.

This is a book that should be on every publisher's personal bookshelf, and in every workshop that produces texts-to-be-read. Any student of graphic design will be missing a trick if they do not have a well thumbed copy in their studio. A Masterclass liberates a creative imagination, and that is precisely what BOOK TYPOGRAPHY does.

I direct a major international publishing course and we have now used BOOK TYPOGRAPHY for two years. Its effect has been remarkable. Course members have learned more quickly and learned better. They have becomre more adventurous as well as more practical in their designs. Even somewone (like me) who is a klutz in every aspect of book design can produce more than acceptable work. In that sense it is a handbook, but one that fires the imagination rather than just solves problems.

Only one thing needs to be said about this book: if you have the slightest interest in book typography - buy it. Not only does it tell you everything you will ever need to know about book typography, but it is a thing of beauty in its own right. I just wish that the publishers had produced a hardback version, beautifully produced though the paperback is.

This is a very good book. It builds secure foundations and then leads on to sophisticated designs. I work as a production editor but without a design background and I have found it invaluable.

I am a 3rd year student in Graphics and really i am learning more in this book than at uni! I was a bit surprised (positively) by the thickness of the book , that can sit proudly on your bookshelf! As for the content, it is extensively detailed and has tons of information about pretty much EVERYTHING about type.

Really a must have.
