About time!,
By Tal Qual (London) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Book of Repulsive Women (Paperback)
This collection of Barnes' poetry is a must for anyone interested in literary Modernism, but also for plenty of other folk. With a concise but very clear and useful introduction and a few of Djuna's idiosyncratic wood cuts dotted around, it's a great edition. This is the first collection of her poetry, and includes stuff never seen in book form before. If you don't know anything about Djuna Barnes, start with Nightwood, but you should follow up with this shortly after. Was she a Great poet? Nope, but this is very intersting stuff, showing the influences ranging from Emily Dickinson to the day's newspaper. Djuna has often been seen through the window of Eliot and Pound, perhaps this is the first step in giving her room of her own!

New and uncovered,
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Book of Repulsive Women: Selected Poems (Fyfield Books) (Paperback)
This collection is somewhat misleadingly titled - it isn't just the collection suggested by the title, but a true collected Djuna Barnes poetry edition. It features poetry that until now was only in in newspapers and periodicals. It's a fascinating insight into this truly original and important 20th century voice. Anyone interested in modernism or the women who were the uncelebrated voices within it should be interested in this.

Talk about misleading,
By Nello "Nello" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Book of Repulsive Women (Paperback)
A warning to Kindle readers -- As Amazon has done before, this page makes it look like this is a Kindle edition of the book described. It is not. The Kindle edition is a copy of the far shorter public domain chapbook that appeared under this title. There is no Kindle edition of the longer book. I find it truly objectionable that Amazon lists "Kindle Edition" in situations like this, making readers think they are purchasing one thing when they will be getting something far different.

Kindle Edition is small snippet of the book!!!,
By Elizabeth Schultz - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Book of Repulsive Women (Illustrated) (Kindle Edition)
I wrote this is a comment to Nello, but wanted to also make sure that my review of this Kindle Version is made very clear. As Nello said in a very informative review, this is only a small bit of the printed book. Unfortunately, I found this out after I had purchased the 'Kindle Version', and had to go to my computer to look this up. I was wondering why this book was so short. And wondering, where are the illustrations? Where was the informative introduction that was described so well in Amazon's description of the book in my Kindle Store?
Amazon should not be able to sell a book as a Kindle Version without telling you that it is just a snippet. There was nothing about that in the description. How will I tell if other books are going to be big disappointments like this one? Dear Amazon, as a new Kindle reader, I feel this is frustrating, misleading, and a rip-off!!! This review has nothing to do with the author or her work, but only the Kindle Version that I paid for after reading the deceptive description posted by Amazon. I would like them to make it clear what you are paying for when you get a Kindle Version. If it is not the complete book, then state that in the description. |
