Product Description

Product Description

Popular since its original publication more than 25 years ago, Leonard Cohen's classic book of contemporary psalms is now beautifully repackaged.

Internationally celebrated for his writing and his music, Leonard Cohen is revered as one of the great writers, performers, and most consistently daring artists of our time. Now beautifully repackaged, the poems in Book of Mercy brim with praise, despair, anger, doubt and trust. Speaking from the heart of the modern world, yet in tones that resonate with an older devotional tradition, these verses give voice to our deepest, most powerful intuitions.

This book comes with me on all my travels. When I read it, I laugh and I cry. It's simply the most beautiful account of an individual's wrestle with G-d and the human need to find meaning that I've ever read. Truly breath-taking poetry. Leonard, how do you do it?

This book of 'psalms' is earthy, real and thought-provoking. Just what you need when life and spirituality seem a tad far apart! I have bought copies for others because I know his way of expressing so much in a few words will speak to many people...the poetic and metaphoric style leave room to meet your own experience.

Leonard Cohen wrote these modern day psalms while living in a little caravan in the south of France. It was during a time of immense turmoil in his personal life and he wrote these very intimate confessions to confront these issues. By doing this, he had to reveal his most personal thoughts and feelings and he said that half-way through each of these prayers he felt the relief.

Although for me it was not possible to connect to each and everyone of these essays I realised throughout the book that this was a brave piece of work. It is not a book to read like a novel and put on the shelf to forget, but rather a spiritual guide to consult from time to time when you feel the need. Here is a poet at work in every word, every phrase, every image.

Recommended to those who love poetic writing and conversations with God to obtain peace of mind.
