Product Description

Book Description

The Celtic tradition has given us some of our most beautiful and evocative names. This gift book lists the most popular names for both boys and girls, giving their derivations, pronunciations, meanings and the legends associated with historical and mythical namesakes. The saints' days for every month are also included, allowing a child's birth to be matched to the name of his or her birthday saint.
The names, from the ever-popular Liam and Bridget to the more unusual Aoife and Lochlainn, are accompanied by specially commissioned illustrations and tap into the growing popularity of displaying a cultural affinity in the naming of a child.

About the Author

Born in Dundee and educated at Oxford University and the Courtauld Institute of Art, Iain Zaczek has a background in Celtic legend and culture. He has extensively researched and written on the subject.

I named both of my children from this book (and the Scottish one) and have kept these beautiful books as keepsakes for them.

1.0 out of 5 stars Pretty but not useful, 27 Dec 2007
By IrishMama - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Book of Irish Names (Paperback)
Beware of this book if you, like me, are pregnant and trying to find the perfect Irish name before your baby is born. The book is very pretty and informative about the names it actually has. However, although it has 90 pages of names there are only 1-3 names per page and several pages have pictures with no names. In fact, it has only 80 boy's names and 71 girl's names. I believe they took the most popular names and gave the reader a paragraph on the origin of each, which is nice but now I still need to buy another book to make sure I've also considered the many more obscure Irish names for my baby.

3.0 out of 5 stars Almost but not quite, 24 April 2009

It's fantastic that this book even exists, but it falls short. It is not very inclusive nor comprehensive.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource of you are considering an Irish name for your child, 29 July 2008
By Charles Ashbacher - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Book of Irish Names: The Origins and Meanings of Over 150 Names for Children (Hardcover)
The Irish brought many things with them when they left their native land and went to the United States. Along with leprechauns and other myths, they include their names. As is the case in any culture, the name is generally an abbreviation for a more exalted title and a linguistic modification of another name. For example, Sean is the Irish form of John and means "God's gracious gift."
This book contains the explanation of over 150 Irish names, roughly evenly split between male and female. If you are about to have a baby or are just interested in the origins of common Irish names, then this is a book that will interest you.
