Book Description

6 Mar 2008

This eighth edition includes quotes from everyone - Shakespeare to Shankly, Camus to Cantona, Busby to Beckham - who has made an apt, pithy or comical comment about football. And not just footballers and managers either - fans, pundits, groundsmen, directors and wives all get to have their say too. Every subject is covered - from tactical debates to changing lifestyles - to produce a sometimes hilarious and always thought-provoking commentary on the game. Anyone who thought 'sick as a parrot' and 'over the moon' was as profound as it got, will be pleasantly surprised by the elegance and insight on display.

Contributions include gems from all the old masters: Cloughie, Tommy Docherty, Jimmy Greaves and George Best. And new quotes from the likes of Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo, Didier Drogba, John Terry, Cesc Fabregas, Steven Gerrard, Joey Barton, Jose Mourinho, Ian Holloway, Rafa Benitez, Delia Smith and Simon Jordan.

'Footballers are no different from human beings' - Graham Taylor

'I'm a Nigerian and I will remain a Nigerian until I die' - Kanu

'The girls like Frank Lampard and I'd see something in him if I was that way' - John Terry

'I didn't watch the England v Argentina game in 1998 - it was past my bed-time' - Theo Walcott

'My ankle injury is a real pain in the arse' - David Prutton

'Five per cent of me's disappointed to finish second, but the other 50 per cent is happy we've qualified' - Michael Owen

'Wayne Rooney has signed a deal to do five books, which is an awful lot of crayons' - Radio DJ Johnnie Walker

Amazon Review

"If there is an apology, it must be coming by horseback" Arsène Wenger
When Arsenal's po-faced manager made his wry comment at Alex Ferguson's claim he had sent an apology after his off-the-record comments were published about how Arsenal turned games into battles, nobody would be surprised at the acerbic attitude of Wenger's Manchester Utd rival.

If you want to relive this and many, many more equally amusing and famous comments or simply hear them for the first time, the latest edition of The Book of Football Quotations is a great place to kick off.

Packed with amusing, touching and sometimes downright ignorant comments ("The only place for women in football is making the tea at half-time." --Rodney Marsh, former England player) the book will provide you with far more than the usual 90 minutes of entertainment.

Making no pretence at political correctness, ("I shook his hand. That hand's been on so many pairs of boobs." --Gazza on meeting Sean Connery) Phil Shaw's collection of gems will have you laughing out loud long before the final whistle. Most of the big names are represented in one form or another, as are a few of the newer faces to grace the pitch:

"I'll be in trouble with my girlfriend if I'm picked--I don't think she'll be too happy to hear I've been chasing Totti around Rome" --Jonathon Woodgate, teenage Leeds Utd defender, on the prospect of facing Roma striker Francesco Totti, 1998.
Great for any footie fan, this is a book that will regularly have you running into extra time! --Lucie Naylor --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

This is by far the best collection of football quotes I have come across. 550 pages jam-packed with quotes from hundreds of different characters conveniently classified into different chapters on players, managers, fans etc.

Books like this can be tedious, but importantly this one is very well presented and it's easy to find quotes attributed to your favourite club, manager etc via a comprehensive index. Very easy to read and so addictive, you might be up all night reading it.
