City Boy, while having always been one of my favourite bands, were sadly fated to be one of rocks most under-rated outfits. 'Book Early' was originally released in 1978 and it is certainly the most commercial set that the group released. 'City Boy' (1976), 'Dinner At The Ritz'(1977) and 'Young Men Gone West' (1977) had certainly been strictly progressive rock so whether this record was more pop slanted due to record company pressure looking for a 'hit single' who knows? Whatever, with the success of rock/pop hit single '5.7.0.5' the band had their first (and sadly only) top ten hit in July/August 1978 when the song reached no8 on the british chart. I have always felt however, that the rather weak 'What A Night' (which, had previously appeared in a different form as a b side) was the WRONG choice for a follow up. It stalled at no 39 and I feel sealed the bands fate as essentially one hit wonders. So what can you expect from the rest of 'Book Early'? It's a record full of pop sensibilities, progressive rock, romantic songs and one serious 'kick ass' rock song in 'Cigarettes' that ably shows what a great guitarist Mike Slamer is. A lot of the songs here are kind of a mix of all those ingredients and I think the uplifting and catchy 'Goodbye Laurelie' or the poppy but progressively shifting 'Summer In The Schoolyard' should have been the follow up single to 5.7.0.5'. 'Do What You Do, Do Well' and 'Dangerous Ground' are more in the vein of the groups earlier recordings while 'Raise Your Glass (To Foolish Me)' and 'Beth' are lighter more straightforward songs. All in all, this always was a great album and its good to see it on cd after 30 years. Worth a purchase.

Well haing read the previous two reviews its all been said for me. Well done chaps. To me City Boy are without doubt the most underated act in music. I've been lucky enough to track down all of their albumns and have been thrilled with the quality of material. I even have the last studio LP and the averagely compiled Antholidgy. Book Early is indeed commercial but every track is enjoyable especailly Cigerretes and Dangerous Ground. There's no more for me to say due to the thoughtfull reviews of the previous two gentlemen. I would only add, look them up, take a listen and see what you've been missing!

English rock group City Boy release this `Book Early ` album in 1978 and helping it to reach the dizzy heights of the bottom end of the album charts is , their catchy single ` 5-7-0-5 `which climbed to UK 8 and US 27. obviously the band toured the US and found interest but it was nt lasting. This is album number Four along with their Second `Dinner at the ritz`76, is the peak of their achievements . complex layered vocals supreme guitar work by Mike Slamer, a fantastic core in the group which everything else is just hinged to, Imagine 10CC mixed with Todd Rundgren. and a let loose guitarist on fret melting `Cigarettes `.. sounds messy but tastes delicious..!10 star album once rare now finally re-released

Very exciting stuff on this album, it copletely blew me of my chair. I knew a few of the songs which I hadn't heard for many years. It's progressive, melodic rock/pop mixed with an excellent chorus all at the same time. These guys were years ahead of their time and sadly their albums never got the recognition they deserved. If you're into progressive rock/pop this is a must!
