While you could purchase a bog-standard TV hard drive recorder, most are still the size of a small briefcase and you can easily spend £100 for a pathetic 350GB. You won't want to carry it around either. Meet the younger, more attractive, sister: The WD My Book. It works with a string of High Def TV's with one click record.

The beauty of this product is that it's optimised for the stress and strains associated with heavy duty TV recording and playback. You know, all that non-stop disk reading/writing/buffering etc. They call it 'WD GreenPower Technology'. Essentially it's a standard external HDD (nothing new there) but with beefed up stress management, lower power consumption (there is a standby mode) and it's compatible with HD TV's that offer the one-click recording function.

The item is small, quiet and neat - the 'little black dress' of the entertainment world. About the size of 2 paperback novels stuck together. It's unobtrusive and won't ruin your lounge.

In the past, I've been badly burned by HDD drives that have died on me, and have always preferred SSD because they have no moving parts and tend to be more reliable (no moving parts = less to go wrong). However the WD My Book, although requiring a power cable, is manufactured to withstand the high temperatures associated with entertainment centres.

Thankfully the instruction manual is a single piece of paper. This is because it's very easy to operate. Plug in, attach the USB 3.0/2.0 generously long cable, wait for your TV or PC to say 'hello'.

This also works very well as a stand-alone external drive when connected to a PC. My laptop recognised it about 60 seconds and I noticed that the file transfer was quick.

And finally, excellent buffering.

One of the HDDs recommended for my Panasonic Viera TX-L42DT65B. The HDD is purely a storage device, quite small, and all the recording controls are through the TV. Hence only need one remote control – the TV one. Only need one aerial connection – to the TV. The HDD is not as sophisticated as a PVR - which has several extra features - but it is cheaper.

Prior to buying, had 2 main queries - emailed Panasonic and WD but answers were unhelpful (being polite). Have answered the queries conclusively following purchase. Would sub-titles be recorded (my wife is deaf and subtitles are essential)? – yes where available on original programme. Could you record 2 DVB channels simultaneously? The Panasonic eHelp implied you needed satellite to record 2 channels (we don’t have satellite), but not correct – you can record 2 DVB channels simultaneously.

When recording, must leave the TV on standby or the TV must be on – if you switch it off, you won’t record. However, when the TV is on standby, the HDD appears to power down until time to record.

Can’t record a series using the electronic TV Guide – you have to do via Timer Programming (eg specifying every Monday 2000 – 2100 hours). So if there is a change in the timings of a series programme (eg football rules the World), you might be upset, watching football on playback. This is where a PVR scores (sorry) as you can record a series from the Guide and the timing will be based on the broadcaster’s programme signal.

With the previous 2 PVRs we had (Bush and Humax), we found that if you paused, rewound or fast-forwarded, the subtitles would take several seconds to kick in and often would be out of synch with the picture (not helpful for my wife).

Great hard drive. Simply plug it into a compatible device, it's recognised and suddenly you have 2TB of space. Very easy to use, no problems and smooth recording and playback. However, I did intend to use this on my Humax PVR which supports external hard drives, but it turns out that this is only for playback not recording. Instead I had to use it on the (newer) Samsung TV and it worked fine. You just need to check compatibility carefully. Other than that not problems and its not just for TVs, can also be used as a high spec external hard drive for PCs and Macs.

Excellent drive giving masses of space for TV recordings.

The above specifications do not mention it, but the drive is formatted in FAT32, not NTFS. This may be significant for your intended use, as the maximum file size of an individual recording in FAT32 is 4GB. For standard definition programmes this equates to around 3 hours of video, sufficient for most recordings. If you are using this drive for high definition programmes however, 4GB is reached in little over an hour and a longer recording will be truncated.

If you will be recording HD programmes and your TV or PVR will accept an NTFS formatted external drive (not all do, so you need to check) an option would be to format this drive to NTFS with the disk management tools included on a Windows PC (Control Panel>Administrative Tasks>Computer Management>Disk Management) before use. WARNINGS: 1) Formatting a drive will wipe all data on it. 2) Make sure you have selected the right drive for formatting, and double check before starting this irreversible process. 3) The disk management tool in Windows will not allow you to return a drive of this size back to FAT32 format.
