I bought this General Books "reprint" of Crowley's 1913 book because it seemed cheap. It turns out to have been automatically scanned and rewritten by Optical Character Recognition software. It therefore has no pictures, numerous typos and missing text. Crowley's terse and allusive original text demands accurate reproduction and this edition is wildly infuriating. In recognition of this major defect, the publishers offer access to an online pdf of the original. I wouldn't have bought the book if I wanted to read it on screen. I have ordered a proper copy elsewhere. Apparently cheap, but very poor value for money.

The first part outlines yoga very honestly and reflects brilliantly Crowley's personal experience of the art in Ceylon and elsewhere. Certainly he is being cruel to be kind and says it like it is. I was more keen to read part two, 'Magick'. Here we are given very precise instructions on the construction of the magical weapons and magical temple. And yes, here our suspicions are confirmed - to do so requires time, skill and most of all money. Even the gold pommel of the magical sword is in the four figures region. It is quite small though; I finished it, at leisure, within a week. The illustrations are sufficient to get the idea across. This book is the introduction of 'Magick' which some claim is THE Crowley text. If you are scared to dive in at the deep end perhaps this is the one for you.

Crowley's observations concerning the religous leaders of history such as Paul, Moses, Jesus, Mohamet and Gautamma were excellent. He clearly alludes to a scientific process that occurs in humanity wereby a divine nature is attained. He does so in easy terms that seem to laugh from the pages at "over-thinkers."

Additionally, his pointing out of the lack of a "super-dog" in our world, like Pascal before him, is simple brilliance. Crowely certainly found some of his answers.

The first few pages of this book interested me, while the body of it did not - on the weight of those few pages though, I give it four stars.
