Boogie Woogie Hanon 24 July 2003
Format:Paperback
Music books usually get a star deducted if they're not spiral bound, and this one is fairly thick. However, the exercises will be memorised, so it's not really a problem, and it's great value for money.
I'm a middle aged beginner, still struggling with the drudgery of learning to sight read and excercises are needed to get the fingers moving freely. Trouble is, they're boring.
These excercises (100 in all) are anything but boring. They are each 12 bars you can also play with your guitarist friends.
Blues based music has a satisfying earthiness to it, even more so if you're the one creating it. Some fluency has to be developed to progress to newer excercises, but that's the point.
Excercise #1 is a simple 4 to the bar and I was changing chords instinctively on the first day. #2 develops some independance between hands. #3 syncopates the chord change, which has got me counting very very slowly trying to make my fingers behave, but I've only had the book a week.
Some people can't stand boogie woogie. I'm sure everyone else will be happy with this book, from raw beginners who just want to get some music out of their fingers to experienced players wanting their hands totally independant. #79 is 4 beats LH against 3 sets of triplets RH, err... maybe next week. :-)
Lots of learning here on a style of music that, like Bach, is easy for beginners and very difficult for experts. Leo Alfassy has broken it down into small chunks anyone can manage with a little diligence.

My teacher played some of the later excercises for me, I'm well impressed. So is he, and is buying a copy for himself. So should you.

As a mature learner, trying to teach myself to play the piano I am constantly on the lookout for jazz oriented tuition books and exercises. Struggling with grade two of the ABRSM Jazz Piano pieces, I read johnmachett's review and decided to give it a try. Each exercise is slightly more difficult than the previous one and so I feel, even though I have only got up to Ex 17 so far, as if I am making progress as I move through the book - a rather different experience from trying to get an ABRSM piece under my belt. The latter are ultimately more satisfying but the Hanon pieces are fun to play. A good resource.

Great intro to boogie woogie rhythms 6 Nov 1999
By M. Meyer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
What the Hanon exercises are to piano in general, Boogie Woogie Hanon is to 'hot' music. This book starts with the most fundimental rhythms for boogie woogie, and gradually presents more difficult variations and keys.

Unlike Hanon, however, these patterns are used frequently in boogie woogie songs, and are also a great basis for improvisation. Mastering the exercises in this book will give you a great leg up on sight-reading boogie woogie charts, boogie-izing other songs, and writing your own compositions.

Highly recommended.

Great Introduction to the Style 18 Feb 2000
By "g_zink" - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
A superior book....one of the few great boogie workbooks, especially for the beginner but up through the fairly advanced pianist....something here for just about anyone. Many, many different bass and riff examples. Gives you a great start on coming up with your own. Get your transcription gear together; this book and a few Meade Lux Lewis, Albert Ammons, and Pete Johnson recordings will have you well on your way. Well worth the money....nothing else quite like it.

Basic and boring 21 April 2003
By Joanna Daneman - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is a book that WILL teach you the basics of the boogie woogie bass for piano.

It is not musically interesting. But, if you use this book AND some recordings of great jazz boogie-woogie players, you might figure out how to get that thumping, chugging sound. The examples in the Hanon, however, are pretty dull but serviceable for learning the method.
