Biography

The Clarksdale, Mississippi-born musician burst on the national scene with his first record, "Boogie ... Read more in Amazon's John Lee Hooker Store

Hooker's early recordings 12 July 2014

Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
This is 40 track 2 cd collection with some of Hooker's earliest recordings. CD1 covers 20 songs recorded 1948 through 1952. It starts with "Boogie Chillen" and "Sally Mae," which was Hooker's very first ever single, plus "Hobo Blues" and "Hoogie Boogie," which made up his second release. Also included are "Crawlin' King Snake" from 1949 and "in the Mood" from 1951. CD 1 is rounded out by other Hooker classics like "Goin' Down Highway 51 (1950)," "Queen Bee" (1951), "Graveyard Blues" (1949), and "Little Boy Blue" (1951) credited to Hooker, and sounding just like the version credited to Robert Jr. Lockwood around the same time.

CD2 has songs dating from 1953 and 1954. It opens with "Too Much Boogie," "Need Somebody," "Gotta Boogie," "Pouring Down Rain," "Lovin' Guitar Man," "Stuttering Blues" and "Blue Monday," all from 1953, and Half a Stranger," (1954) all (like CD1) just Hooker and his guitar. The last 12 songs on CD2 feature Hooker with another guitar, bass, drums and piano, but no credits are given beside the year recorded.

The sound quality is pretty good for mono, especially considering when they were recorded. I'm guessing that these were recorded in Detroit, but don't hold me to it. I'm sure these have all been cleaned up and possibly re-mastered, but there are no notes In this collection, other than the song titles and the year recorded. This is a worthwhile and decent collection of Hooker's earliest recordings, and there are a ton of them available.
