4.0 out of 5 stars Saving paper and looking cool while doing so 30 Mar 2011
I bought this 4 months ago and am using it daily at work for a temporary to do list or quick notes that I only need for a short time. I'm very fond of it.

It's very simple to use: you write or draw with anything that doesn't mark or scratch the surface. anything that can apply pressure like your fingernail, the back of a pen, etc.
That's how you write. There are no pixels, no recharging... it'll just stay on the surface for as long as you don't press the erase button. When you press it the screen will flash and blank out the surface. That's the only time it uses power which makes it so battery efficient. It needs no current to hold your note or drawing.

The only drawback I see is that it has a pretty low contrast. The product images are very optimistic. It is readable and you can photograph it if you ever need to save one of your notes for longer, but you'll have to enhance the contrast of the image and in low light conditions it might be hard to read.
Some complain that it has no memory, but for it to have memory and save your page contents to be recalled it would need to have a special pen, draw power while you write, be thicker, more expensive etc. I think this is a good compromise and it suits the way I use it.

The second they bring out a high contrast version of it I will replace my current one. But even like this I'm using it daily and I'm glad I bought it

2.0 out of 5 stars I don't really get it. 11 Sep 2012
By Mozza
I love tech, and I love making notes, so this seemed the perfect marriage.
I bought it myself for xmas last year, and also got my dad one - they are very organised, so I thought they'd appreciate it. I've almost discarded ours, and from the lack on notes on my dads and the unaccessable place he now has it stored, I'd say they feel the same!

I wanted a by the phone/on the fridge type of thing - I currently have a small blackboard on the fridge, but invariably you can't find a pen, or accidentally use a permenant marker. So I thought this might be what I need.

You write on it with any blunt object. It comes with a stylus. The print on the screen sort of light grey, and the 'screen' is black. It's not the most stand out of contrasts (the pics here look like a different machine!)
It feels quite nice and tactile to write on, that said.

Apart from the lack of contrast, with this model you have to erase everything on the screen at one press of the erase button - you can't erase certain notes, or part of the screen.
I can't imagine many times when that is practical. With my blackboard now, I tend to be adding to and taking off the lists as the days go on. With this you'd have to re-write it all - not ideal, same at work with my to-do lists.
I guess if you were making meeting notes or whatever, you wouldn't need to do this, but the screen isn't really big enough for a note book (not for me anyway)

Finally, when you consider what you're replacing - a blackboard or a notepad - it's a bit expensive for what it is!

On the other hand, it's a neat, light weight object, seems quite well made, and is a tidy solution, if you're in the niche that might use it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Gadget 19 July 2012
My wife bought this for me after seeing the amount of post-its I use everyday.
After using the Boogie Board I will not be using paper for notes again.

The board is so thin and light you can take it anywhere. It has so many uses, even my daughter likes to play with it.

Included in the box is -

- Boogie Board
- 13.5cm (approx) stylus.
- Microfibre cleaning cloth.
- Instructions.

The board is very easy to clean. The microfibre cloth is handy as the board picks up finger prints and smudges from your hands. I use LCD wipes to clean my board to remove any stubborn marks.

The board has a built-in battery which cannot be changed. The battery is supposed to last for 50,000 erase cycles. On average I wipe the board around 15 times a day so this should last me around 9 years (Im sure I will buy the newer version way before then).

This version of the Boogie Board does not allow you to save what you have written. There is a new version available which allows you to save - Boogie Board RIP LCD Writing Tablet - Black

This is a fantastic gadget and is so handy. Highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Great 8 Mar 2012

Verified Purchase
I bought this for my brother in law who has throat cancer and cannot speak and instead of using paper he now has this and it is really good. Its ideal for persons who also has this type of problem, and should be adopted by the NHS and or social workers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Version 1.0 of a great technology 23 Oct 2011
By Pieter
I've been looking for something like this for months. I often used paper for quick scribbles. Thanks to this e-ink powered writing tablet, I can now jot down temporary notes without wasting paper. I use it for calculations, brainstorming and to explain things to someone else.

Here's why it's still the first iteration on the way to a great invention:
- You cannot use an eraser, you can only clear the entire screen
- I don't think it's suitable for detailed drawing
- Your notes cannot be saved
- It's noticeably thicker than paper, so it feels less comfortable
- The battery is not replaceable, but the manufacturer says you'll get max. 50.000 uses out of it (that's 2500 days at 20 uses a day) and you can send it back for battery replacement

Some of these shortcomings will be resolved in the upcoming Boogie Board RIP tablet, which will be priced around 100 if I'm not mistaken. Also, keep in mind that this product is smaller than an A4 paper, which makes it unsuitable for longer calculations. Still, I knew what I was getting into and yet I bought it. It's a very interesting technology and this will certainly not be the last we see of it.
