Product Description

Album Description

• Part based on the club listings of the early 70’s and part based on the club listings of today, this compilation has the dance floor groovers with a bit of strum, a bit of stomp, and a whole lotta Glam!

• You’ve probably never heard of any of the artists, but those collecting the Lipsmackin’ series appear to be used to that now. In fact as with one recent review of Volume 5 (Bubble Pop) they get a bit miffed if any of the tracks were a hit! .

• Some acts do have interesting links, Jimmy Jukebox is that Nut Rocker Kim Fowley, Shout It Out was written and produced by John Springate of the Glitter Band, Little Bit O’Soul was /is a 60’s Northern Soul classic by the Music Explosion given the glam treatment, the Jets keyboard player was also in Cockney Rebel, Roxy Roller was re-recorded by the singer in Sweeney Todd, Nick Gilder ,who had a solo hit with it in 1977, Good Time Fanny was written and produced by Andy Scott of the Sweet. All meat and drink to the collector.

• Oh, and BOOBS actually was the name of an early 70s discotheque, in south London and Bristol (appropriately) at least, probably elsewhere too.

• Volume 6 in this successful Lipsmackin 70’s series; Deliciously obscure artists yet familiar sounds and first time reissue for all tracks.

It's a shame that the only other review for this album is negative and revolves around the fact that the author confused the UK and US versions of the compilation which feature slightly different tracks and an alternative running order. Kick yourself maybe, but don't knock the music here - which remains excellent throughout.

An overlooked genre which marries elements of 50's Rock n Roll, bubblegum, pop sensibility and the ever present glam beat. It's amazing there were so many bands who never made the charts with such great hooky material - on the evidence here - most tracks are potential hits - but I guess the UK Top 50 was just too overcrowded - as always.

If you like Sweet, Slade, T.Rex, Chicory Tip, Bowie, then you will recognise the references and want to hear the also-rans, which deserve your attention just as much as the ones that made it. In every era, the underbelly of rock is always interesting and this compilation proves it beyond reasonable doubt.

Perfect Purchase 5 Jan 2011
Format:Audio CD
I bought this CD for the otherwise unavailable Hector track from my youth, Wired Up. The album was just as described as in the 20 tracks listed here and did not disappoint.

Firstly, let me clear up the track listing issue that's been raised. Please note that tracks no' 6, 7, 11, 14, and 20 as listed here are NOT on the U.K issued cd, so if you are thinking of buying this purely to own one of those 5 tracks on cd don't because you'll be disappointed! This aside, if you love 70's Glam, you should be buying this anyway as its great! Though none of the tracks were hits at the time, for the deprived Glam fan (left with only the established hits to enjoy) many of these will come as a breath of fresh air and revive many a happy memory. The influences are pretty obvious throughout this cd. 'The Rats -Turtle Dove' has very Bolanesque vocals, and T rex definitely inspired both Chunky and Paul Ryan. The 'gloriously glam' Shelby's cover of (Dance With) The Guitar Man is probably the best track on the whole compilation and comes complete with Hey! shouted vocals and a glitter beat. Elsewhere, Screemer's - 'Interplanetary Twist' has elements of The Sweet's 'Hellraiser' in it and The Sensation's 'Black Eyed Woman' features a little MUD style guitar! Of interest to glam collectors especially will be Ice Cream's version of the Glitter Band's 'Shout It Out' (written by John Springate) and Angel's 'Good Time Fanny' written and produced by two members of Sweet. Also excellent are the Erasmus Chorum, Barry Blood, Hector and Iron Cross tracks and Jimmy Jukebox's 'Motor Beat' has hilarious lyrics and is a real blast. If you loved 70's pop or the glam rock era you really can't go wrong with this!
