Review

'Young children everywhere will delight in the adventures of Boobela and Worm.' (PUBLISHING NEWS )

'a very sweet collection of stories set in a land of forbidden caves and haunting castles... an enchanting storybook for younger readers with charming illustrations by Sam Childs.' (Becky Stradwick THE BOOKSELLER )

'In Boobela and Worm, the shy lonely giantess has no friends until a worm tells her that her feet stink. This is an excellent beginning, and the tone of affectionate honesty is kept up... Joe Friedman's Worm is so gentle, funny and wise that it comes as no surprise to find that he unlocks Boobela's ability to heal others... There are not enough good books for this age range, and Friedman's sympathetic approach will make this one to re-read.' (Amanda Craig THE TIMES )

'The pictures and interesting typography make the book an ideal stepping stone between picture books and novels... one to reread.' (Amanda Craig THE TIMES )

'combines quirky originality with gentle simplicity in the text and in Sam Child's images.' (Nicolette Jones THE SUNDAY TIMES )

'gentle, warm-hearted stories.' (WRITE AWAY )

'charmer of a short story collection with an old-fashioned feel.' (Justine Crow FAMILIES SOUTH EAST )

'Great pathos and humour' (ANGELS AND URCHINS )

'delightful' (Susan Archer WOMEN'S WEEKLY )

'charming' (IRISH EXAMINER )

4.0 out of 5 stars Children love this book, 7 April 2008

This review is from: Boobela and Worm (Paperback)
I have three children, 8, 4 and 18 months, boys and girls. They all love these stories. Boobela is a giant girl, eight years old. Her parents are away exploring the jungles for plant medicines and her grandmother has to go home to her grandfather leaving Boobela alone and lonely. She befriends worm and their unlikely friendship gives them both courage, strength and the ability to go on marvellous adventures.

As an adult I have to say that the writing style doesn't appeal. There are random plot holes and quirky sentence structures which drove me mad. The children didn't notice and wouldn't care. The illustrations are fantastic and they all love them.

The book is nicely laid out with three long stories and lots of little additions along the way. This is clearly the start of a series as the last story ends on a bit of a cliff hanger. The children are already clamouring for the next book.

This is a lovely book with quirky illustrations. All our four kids plus 2 adults read it with relish, which is in itself quite an achievement! Do yourself a favour. Beg, borrow or as a last resort even buy it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars This One Is A Must, 7 Oct 2007

A great children's story about magic and empathy. The author evoked a playful feeling in me as I read it to my granddaughter. Even as adults we can all learn a lesson in loving honesty from Worm. He tells Boobela her feet stink with genuine concern and it's such a delight to watch their relationship grow. The characters are alive and the illustrations are just lovely.
