Product Description

They're back...Was (Not Was) - the darlings of the avant disco set and avatars of the absurd - have emerged from the abyss of the recording industry with a new long-player, Boo! It's been almost 20 years since their last salvos of surrealistic soul and Jurassic dance mixes delighted and terrified nightclub crawlers and pop maniacs with the hits "Walk the Dinosaur" and "Spy in the House of Love." Once again, these shamelessly funky court jesters (featuring the original line up, plus some very special guests) are mixing it up and working without a net, performing a high-wire act that stretches from the ridiculous to the sublime. Are you scared yet?

You have to hand it to Don and David Was... the boys' have got the funky, jazz-fusion soul brother vibe down in straight aces. Man, I cannot get over their new album "BOO!" - they're first new studio album since 1992. Simply put, it's a mindblower.

The minute you slap the CD on, out pops a the funky soul workout "Semi Interesting Week", complete with soul backing vocals, guitar and a cooler-than-now horn section. You begin to ask yourself, "The only other band who can pull this kind of funky stuff off, is Steely Dan, but even the Dan are too clinical sounding when it comes to the rough edges of Was (Not Was)."

Second track which has 'hit single' written all over it, is like a throwback to Booker T. and the MGs or the Temptations. "It's A Mircale" is like a wake up call to the authentic Detroit soul sound of yesteryear, horns a pumping, great vocals from Sweet Pea Atkinson and Sir Harry Bowens.

Third track, I'm totally sucked in. "Your Luck Won't Last" - probably the most cynical song title of the year, is the kind of stuff Prince should be doing. It's like a cross between Cameo's "Word Up" and something off the "Sign O' The Times" album. Retro modern, funky, electro wah wah heavy LA cool. Was (Not Was) reign supreme.

Make no mistake, the band show their true feathers with another colour when the fourth track hits the speakers. "From the Head to the Heart" is the only ballad "There's a story in the paper about a young boy laying dead. He tried stealing a TV set, when he should have been in bed."

It's like a merry-go-round New Seekers vibe, lots of piano and strings. The perfect chill out track after you return from an expensive restaurant with bad service and lots of ugly people staring at each other.

Thank goodness! With Was Not Was you never know just how far off the wall the brothers will go. While I don't enjoy the 'way out' examples of their sense of humour, thankfully much of this CD is musically right out of the top drawer. Funky and sensitive in the same package, this CD is more superb than absurd!

I can't believe I've had to wait roughly half my life for a new Was Not Was album, and it's like they never went away. This is brilliant stuff, full of the funky, soulful sound mixed with off-the-wall and satirical lyrics that they are the true masters of.

The only down-side is it's a stark reminder of how dreadful much modern music in this category has become- anodyne, corporate, and lacking soul, rhythm, energy, passion etc. I just hope that some of those poor kids who think rihanna or justin timberlake are it, are forced to sit down and listen to this album to learn what real music is.

Not as good as some of the old stuff but a welcome return by the Was Bros. As a big fan 15 years is a long wait, but the old stuff stands the test of time. This is really good stuff and worth a listen, and if you like this get the back catalogue as well as some of it's priceless. Only downer is there is no verison of Out Come the Freaks - there was one on every album and a couple of other single versions as well. Come on guys make the wooodwork squeek one more time!
