I went looking for a book to help me care for my new bonsai as soon as I realised I had no idea what I was doing!! I bought this book and also "Bonsai Basics" as both seemed pretty good. "Bonsai: 101 Essential Tips" briefly covers just about everything you need to know as a beginner, from where to keep your bonsai to how and what to feed it. And also, once you get more confident, it also goes into detail about wireing and repotting your tree.
If you like to have a basic guide on what to do, and catch on quickly, this is the book for you. If however you don't trust yourself to get it right straight away (like me) and prefer to have as much information as possible, then "Bonsai Basics" is probably a better choice.

This is the first book I bought on Bonsai, and I refer to this book everytime I have the need. Good, clear definitions and helpful diagrams provide the basis towards understanding the Art of Bonsai.
Includes Botanical, Common Names, the different cultivation methods (ie sun, watering, pruning etc).. Well done, Harry Tomlinson..

This book is great if you're looking for a list of many types of tree you can use for a bonsai. If you are looking for detailed information about the process of creating a bonsai and caring for one, you should look elsewhere. I was frustrated by the vagueness of the instructions in this book. What time of year is best to prune and why? Where can and can't you cut a branch? What are the likely effects of a pruning? These questions, and many more, aren't clearly answered in this book.

Full of beautiful pictures and they are tempting too. I felt like taking my shears start pruning the trees in the garden right away. After an introduction, design principles, bonsai styles are given with actual photographs. Useful tools, suitable species are also introduced and how to create a bonsai, caring and propagating are all taken into account. It is probably the best for the ones just looking for tips. Only 72 pages long and cheap...

This is a good book, its the second one that I have read on bonsai and explains in better detail the techniques and principles of the art. The book could be longer and more detailed but it is good for short quick refrences on what you need to know. It's nice clear diagrams and instructions are easy to follow, all in all its nice and simple.

I bought this book, being a complete newbie to Bonsai's I was hoping for it to be more informative and have more instruction on maintenence and care.
It is well laid out and has many inspiring, pretty pictures of Bonsai but no real substance to it.
I needed some real instruction on the care of individual species and meticulous instructions on root pruning and arrangement... needless to say this book didnt provide what I need.
To be honest I would look elsewhere if you are serious about learning the art of bonsai.

Excellent book to give techniques to people starting out. When people ask me to recommend a book for beginners, I always choose this one first. It's easy to read and the instructions are easy to follow.
