Book Description

20 May 2012
Bonsai trees, with a strong heritage in Japanese tradition, are the artistic miniatures of the plant world. Combining the natural and the artificial, they are as intricate as they are delicate. Each bonsai, in addition to resembling a full-size tree, must adhere to Japanese aesthetics of design and presentation, determined by centuries of example. In other words, bonsai are living sculptures. In this book, acclaimed photographer Jonathan M. Singer showcases over 300 photographs of bonsai taken in some of the most respected private and public collections in the United States and Japan. Most notably, Singer was granted special permission to photograph the collection of the Omiya Bonsai Art Museum in Japan, considered the Mecca of bonsai, where photography is normally prohibited. He is the first (and only) photographer in the world to shoot the most famed bonsai trees in Japan, some of which received the coveted Prime Minister's Award. Singer also had the opportunity to capture the work of Masahiko Kimura, thought to be the most skilled bonsai designer in the world, and artist Seiji Morimae, whose family has worked in horticulture for over 500 years. Among the American bonsai collections photographed in Bonsai are the Pacific Rim Bonsai Collection (Seattle, WA), the Golden State Bonsai Federation Collection South (Pasadena, CA), and the International Bonsai Arboretum (Rochester, NY). Whereas most books on bonsai aim to instruct readers on techniques of care and cultivation, Singer's book takes the reader on a visual journey that focuses on the aesthetic beauty of each featured tree. His images encompass many different species, from azalea to red maple, as well as a variety of blossoms and fruits. Alluring and serene, Singer's photographs make the experience of leafing through Bonsai not unlike entering a real Japanese garden.

It is a huge book, very heavy. Quality binding and presentation. People who dont know much about bonsai and just want to look at the nice pics will be blown away. If like me you bought the book to get inspiration in the design and styling of your own trees, you will be disappointed. The structure of the trees can be seen clearly enough on the smooth barked deciduous species. The structure of rough barked conifers is obscured in darkness and shadows, this made the book totally useless to me, because I bought it to study the branch structure of the world class pines in the book. I browsed the book once when I just got it and have not opened it since, it is just laying under my computer table since it it is too large to fit in my bookshelf. To sum up-this book would be great way to introduce people to bonsai, but not much help-scrap that-no help at all in helping bonsai practitioners design trees.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent photos, and a tribute to breathtaking bonsai from Japan and the USA 10 Sep 2012
By goyo1 - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This book is a tremendous tribute to both the art of photography and bonsai art. Being somewhat familiar with both these art forms, and having previously seen some of the bonsai in the past (through photos and in real life), I must say that the chiaroscuro effects in the photography reveal aspects of the various bonsai to their great advantage. The bonsai have been selected from Japan and the USA, and some of the trees are really famous specimens that bonsai lovers would be familiar with, except that they would probably not have seen it in this light before! And some of the pages of photos are lift-outs, allowing the viewer to extend the page and enjoy the specimen trees. The book is good also for the fact that it gives ample information (size, age, origin of pot and a bit of a write up to each tree) at the back of the book, plus a bonus sample of antique chinese bonsai pots. There is also some information on the location of the nurseries/collections from where the trees have been photographed. And a very good introduction to the history of bonsai is written by Mr. Valavanis. Both Singer and Valavanis need no introductions in their respective professions, but if anyone out there who wants an introduction to the talents of these two consumate professionals, as well as an introduction to both bonsai and photography, this is an indispensable book at a very affordable price for its quality. Buy without hesitation, and breathe in the beauty of bonsai through breath-taking photography. You won't regret it.
