5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful, wonderful read! 31 May 2010
Format:Hardcover
Bonobo Handshake threads together the story of bonobos (the lesser known, high sex drive, peace & love version of chimpanzees), the wonderful people and terrible conflict of Congo, a very frank no-frills story of a marriage... and ties it all together by getting at the heart of human nature. What more could you want from a few hundred pages!

You may know nothing about bonobos (I didn't) but you'll fall in love with them.

You may know little about Congo (I've worked there and it rang very true) but you'll be hooked on finding out more.

You have probably never heard of this author (I hadn't) but she's really funny, profound and tells a cracking story.

This book made me laugh, cry, smile and think about the best and worst of this world. This is a wonderful, wonderful read -- you'll love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended! 4 Nov 2010

I agree with all the other reviews so far that have all given this book 5 out of 5. Where do I start - brilliantly written in a way that lets you really engage with the author, you learn about a species most people have never heard of - bonobos and about the conflicts in the DRC both now and in the past. I couldn't put this book down and enjoyed every minute of it - it was so interesting hearing stories from some of the people she worked with that had seen first hand the war in Congo, it is scary what is happening out there. I loved reading about Lola ya Bonobo Sanctuary (the only Bonobo Sanctuary with the aim to release them back into the wild) and all the different orphans and their different personalities. Vanessa explains the real deal of life at the sancuary, the hard work, danger but why it is all so worth it. She has now set up a website to help the sanctuary raise funds and donations. Anyone with a love of animals or an open mind - read it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational, funny and insightful. 7 Sep 2010
Format:Hardcover
I also did't know much about Bonobo's or the Congo (DRC) and was grateful to learn so much whilst being so entertained. I couldn't put the book down and have also recently read her other book, 'It's every monkey for themselves' about a trip to research monkeys in Costa Rica, which I also recommend! The author is really inspiring, she writes very well and so openly that you are really let into her world and her adventures. I hope so much that this book helps to raise awareness for the Bonobo's as they sound like beautiful animals and are only found in this one country, the unstable Democratic Republic of Congo.
