Product Description

After bedding Brigitte Bardot, and making himself the envy of all France, Serge Gainsbourg set about moulding her pop persona. He cast her as a latter-day Bonnie Parker and himself as her male foil and lover, Clyde Barrow. The spectral funk of the title track is among Gainsbourg's most celebrated works (cited and sampled by many including Renegade Soundwave and MC Solaar). It's a deadpan celebration of outlaw culture from France's most revered contemporary cultural outlaw. The other songs on here written specifically for Bardot are as self-conscious as pop art. The jazz bounce of "Everybody Loves My Baby" is centred around Bardot's Betty Boop-like charms, while "Bubble Gum" is a stab at updating music hall for the Warhol generation; "Comic Strip" is like a musical nod to Liechtenstein. Serge plays the manipulative caped crusader: his muse is left only to vocalise comedy sound effects in larger-than-life speech bubbles. Many of the Serge solo songs on offer here are leftovers from the sound of this earlier afro-jazz period (including "La Javanaise", "Pauvre Lola" and the ode to "Baudelaire"), the best of which is found on the drag-heavy rhythm and mod organ of "Intoxicated Man". --Chris Campion

5.0 out of 5 stars So cool 13 Nov 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This really is cool music. Makes me think of France. I had not heard about it before. It was recommended to me by Lucia Van der Post in her book 'Things I Wish My Mother Had Told Me'.

4.0 out of 5 stars Serge and BB 23 Jun 2000
By "movie-addict" - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Gainsbourg's 60's music is so pop & cute...Nobody else sings these songs like BB does(especially in Comic Strip(#3). Her "Shebam! Pow! Blop! Wizz!" makes this song so vividly pop)! The dangerous(?) sound of sergre & BB's voices in Bonnie and Clyde(#1) seems to me like the reflection of their relationship (BB was married; their relationship wasn't going anywhere just like Bonnie & Clyde couldn't get away from their crimes and were being in the danger together). Great album to get the feel of 60's French pop. Serge is still "singing" in this album, not whispering like in his later works. Definitely before (or begining of ) he established his lorita concept.

5.0 out of 5 stars How to find these tracks.... 1 Jan 2007
By Robert Keith - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This is a great album, but often goes out of print. Snatch it up if you see it.

If you are looking for an alternate way to get these songs:

All of the Serge Gainsbourg tracks are available on an inexpensive compilation called "Love And The Beat" volume 1. You can also download them on iTunes. The Bardot tracks are on a smattering of comps. Enjoy.

2.0 out of 5 stars some kitch appeal though doesn't hold up 30 Dec 2010

This is a fun cultural artifact though listening through the full CD gets a bit monotonous and kills its initial charm. You'd be better off purchasing a few songs off iTunes to let pop up in your shuffle and give you a giggle every now and then.
