Arvilla returns home from collecting her recently deceased husbands ashes only to be confronted by her uptight step daughter demanding the ashes be taken back to her home town to be scattered else Arvilla's home, left to the daughter in her husbands will, will be sold. The widow refuses to go down without a fight & sets off across the countryside with her 2 pals, uptight Mormon Carol,(Joan Allen), & free wheeling Margene,(Kathy Bates),.
They meet a few mildly interesting characters along the way,(Tom Skerritt as truck driver Emmett who takes a shine to Margene), & a young hitchhiker.
One or two very unscary scrapes are gotten through and they eventually make their way to the step daughter's memorial service for her dad.
No big deal & certainly no classic this inevitably bumps a little too close to 'Thelma & Louise' from time to time but this isn't really a watered down version of that admittedly superior film. What this does is let the viewer spend a rather pleasant 90 minutes or so with 3 likeable characters being ably played by 3 stalwarts of dependable acting. During that time some of the South-East American countryside is shown to beautiful effect & before long it all just emits a mellow vibe and you find yourself happy to go along for the ride.
Not perhaps likely to linger long in the memory yet simple & easily digested this is spot on for an escape from reality with very little danger of any offense. The pace is just right & it is nice to not see everything neccessarily sorted by the end & a running time that is all the better for being short.
The picture can be a little grainy at times and there is little use for 5.1 but it's clear & easily followed dialogue is well centered.
If you fancy a night in with an affable, undemanding chick/ road flick then you could do worse than spend a little time with these 3 rather sweet characters bumbling across the countryside in an old '66 Bonneville convertible.

My wife had watched this film on television one evening a while ago and had expressed her enjoyment of the story line and acting, adding that she would appreciate a copy on our DVD shelf to see again on some future occasion - that's not usual for her!

Quick look on Amazon's website secured a copy cheaply & no postage charge! Eventually on one of those evenings when nothing on terrestrial TV excites (surprisingly how often!) my wife suggested we might watch "Bonneville" together. I did enjoy the movie too. It concerns itself with friendship and family testing relationships in the commodious vehicle of the film's name.

Possibly a little more attractive to women who I think would better identify with the characters, but never-the-less quite enjoyable.

I was recommended this film when I was recovering from a road traffic accident. The film contains not only great acting but portrays a wonderful friendship between three women, It is funny, sentimental, sad, romantic, and leaves the viewer felling like they know the character or at least can relate to some of the experiences. I would definitely recommend it again and again, to my friends and family.

I bought this film for my mum, there is such dross on the TV at the moment that i seem to be buying her endless DVD's to watch in the evening, and this was definately one of the better one's. In fact she didnt make any noise for the whole DVD, which is good because she was enthralled, and at the end? ... She said it was 'Really Good' High praise indeed.

If you tell me Kathy Bates is in a film and I'll watch it without needing to know more. This isn't her best performance (Misery remains my favourite) but this film is very enjoyable for a Sunday afternoon. For what I paid for it I'm more than happy.

A great feel good film. Believable acting and a good plot. I enjoyed it because of the wide open scenery as a back drop to the story. Brought back memories.
