Product Description

WINNER BIRMINGHAM JAZZ AWARD 2005 for the best re-issue CD!!! In this third Upbeat volume of rare Alex Welsh broadcast material we are fortunate to be able to incolude, besides more radio recordings, soundtrack from the acclaimed BBCTV Jazz 625 series which in some cases only exists in this form. We can witness how at home visiting American jazzmen were with this fine band, first the urbane Bud Freeman, a regular visitor to these shores, and then trombone giant Dicky Wells on his only UK solo excursion. The CD includes 5 tracks from Jazz 625 ecorded in July 1966, 4 from BBC Jazz Club recorded in February 1974 plus 6 tracks from Jazz 625 recorded February 1966.Tracks 1-5 Jazz 625 6th July 1966 Alex Welsh cornet, John Barnes, clarinet, baritone sax, alto sax, Roy Williams trombone, Fred Hunt, piano, Jim Douglas, guitar, Ron Mathewson, string bass, Lennie Hastings, drums Guest Bud Freeman, tenor sax Tracks 6-9 24th February 1974 same as tracks 1-5 but Harvey Weston string bass (track 8 bass guitar) and Roger Nobes drums (track 8 electric piano) and John Barnes track 8 drums) Tracks 10-15 Jazz 625 23rd February 1966 Same as tracks 1-5 but Dicky Wells trombone.

Another delightful CD resurrected from the BBC's Jazz 625 archives. The great Alex Welsh band plus Bud Freeman on some tracks, and the legendary Dickie Wells on others. I believe this was the only time Wells appeared in this country, and was having a drink problem at the time. However, it doesn't affect his playing here. If you like this trombonist's quirky style of playing you will not be disappointed. Freeman, of course, is as delightful as ever, blending in with Alex's masterly mainstream style to excellent effect. The only reason I have omitted the fifth star is because there isn't a downright, back in the alley, type blues on the album. Blues are meat and drink to me. If. however, the lack of a good blues doesn't deter you, then just sit back and enjoy mainstream jazz at its best. Highly recommended.
