Product Description

From the Publisher

For all who like Thomas Harris:
Hannibal Lechter clone Nick Parrish is the hideous "star" of Burke's latest Irene Kelly mystery. Parrish, arrested for the torture-murder of Julia Sayre, promises to show the cops where he's buried Julia's body in the mountains above Las Piernas. Journalist Kelly has followed the Sayre case since it began, and the police grudingly allow her to come along the gruesome trip to Julia's grave. True to his word, Parrish leads the group to the decomposing body, then offers to show them the graves of other victims he claims he's killed. But Parrish has boobytrapped the graves, and once the bomb goes off, he escapes in the ensuing confusion. A heart-stopping chase through the mountains, with Irene as Parrish's intended victim, would provide a fitting climax for the story, but Burke has more suspense in store. Irene is rescued, but Parrish is still loose, and over the following months he stalks Irene relentlessly. Gruesome "gifts" and a campaign of physical and psychological terror would turn most folks into basket cases, but Parrish's tricks only make Irene more determined to track him down. Burke's latest is very impressive - deviously plotted, cleverly crafted, full of screw-tightening suspense. This may be the book to take Burke to the top tier of literary and popular suspense in the genre.

This newest of the Irene Kelly series grabs you right from page 1 and holds you in its grip right through to the surprising twist at the end. Bones is by far the best book Jan Burke has written to date. This puts her right up there with P. D. James and Patricia Cornwell. A must read for lovers of suspense and mystery.

5.0 out of 5 stars She is the best mystery author of the decade 25 Jun 1999

THE REAL TITLE IS BONES!!!!

Four years ago, a teenage waif Gillian Sayres accosted reporter Irene Kelly outside the office building that housed THE EXPRESS. Gillian was worried that her mother failed to return home the night before. Irene agreed to check out the whereabouts of the missing person, but none of her contacts had any information. Over the years, Gillian and Irene stayed in contact with each other, wondering if any corpses might be that of her mother.
Today it appears the questions surrounding the disappearance of Judith Sayres will be answered. Vicious serial killer Nicholas Parrish offers a deal in which he will take authorities to the body of Judith. He wants in exchange for doing that the dropping of the death penalty. The deal is made and Irene accompanies the police to the alleged grave site. However, a trap is set and Parrish escapes with him chasing after Irene. Parrish plans to returns to his old ways as he now obsesses on his next intended victim, Irene.
Compared with HOCUS and LIAR, BONES is a much darker tale. The brilliant Jan Burke provides readers a guided tour inside the tortured but logical mind and soul of a serial killer who gains much pleasure from mutilating and killing women. The game he plays with Irene seems as intimate in a mirror sense as the reporter's relationship with her beloved spouse. Without the gore, Ms Burke attains the level of a Thomas Harris with her latest thriller.
