This CD if Gabrielle Roth's is a favourite of mine, next to "Ritual". Whereas "Ritual" focusses on the Rhythm of "Flowing" out of her dance/movement practice of the 5 Rhythms, this one embodies all of them, so if you're thinking of taking up this practice, pay attention!!
This CD was designed to fulfil basic 5 Rhythms practice. There are no words or vocals, only music. The first track is a "warm-up" track. The next five tracks follow the Rhythms in order:
"Dolphin" for Flowing, "Raven" for Staccato, "Snake" for Chaos, "Deer" for Lyrical and "Wolf" for Stillness.
However, if you are not interested in the 5 Rhythms, this CD still stands alone as excellent music. It has a strong shamanic feel, the instrumentation is very much reliant on the drum, with other instrumentation proving sparse, but well-placed and effective. The track titles also give away just how much this CD leans towards a more overt shamanism with animal energies being used to provide the inspiration for each track. I feel this is successfully captured in the music.
So, if you like good solid evocative drumming that has a basic sound, then this is the CD for you. It is the reason that I bought it after hearing it years ago and it still gets played five years down the line. Roth does her shamanic training justice within the sounds of this CD. More importantly as a UK based person, the music is not tradition specific. There are no sounds that one could say belongs to a specific culture, which is a refreshing plus-point, with the number of Tibetan chant and Native American CDs currently in existence in the alternative music market. It allows the rhythm of the drum to speak for itself and call further instrumentation as it wishes, which is neither overloaded, dated, or harsh.
