As with all the current great American crime writers (Connelly, Crais, Lehane & Thomas H Cook) it is not always about a great or original plot/storyline. What really makes me enjoy a book are the characters and the dialogue. Hall, over the years, has introduced us to some memorable characters. His heroes such as his main character, Thorn, (not in this book, except for the briefest of mentions) are straight forward anti-heroes, but his baddies are usually off the wall, totally unbelievable but great fun.
Dougie Barnes is one of his best baddies. Totally mental with rhyming speech and completely over the top. Throwing in other strong characters and a plot regarding an environmental scam, Hall delivers an excellent read as usual.
The only reason for four stars and not five is due to the disappointing last couple of chapters.
If you have not tried any books by this author, give him a go. You will not be disappointed.
