Product Description

Product Description

Ubelaker, curator of anthropology at the National Museum of Natural History at the Smithsonian, is one of America's very top 'bone-men', often called upon by the FBI to investigate and help to identify the corpses and body parts of possible victims of foul play. Upon the dozens and dozens of true stories in this book, there are accounts of homicide, cannibalism, ritual sacrifice and other horrific crimes, solved and unsolved, from Ubelaker's own personal casebooks and those of the Smithsonian. Illustrated with over seventy-five photographs and drawings, reconstructions, computer sketches, and photographic super-impositions, this book fascinatingly reveals the indelible stories that bones have to tell.

I bought this book becaseu I need to research the subject of forensic anthropology, and I know nothing about it. I wouldn't say this book tells you everything you need to know but it is definitely a great way to introduce yourself to the subject. The author has an infectious enthusiasm for the subject, which you find yourself picking up.

I would say, in warning to those who like to hear a story from beginning to end, some of the case studies don't tell you whether someone is arrested due to the author's findings, or what the outcome of any resulting prosecutions are, but sometimes you get a full story and these really illustrate how vital forensic anthropology is to murder detection today.

This book is also relatively old so some of the science may have updated significantly since the book was published - on the other hand, you get a remarkable view of a science that was (and is, of course) still developing.

I would recommend this book, therefore, to anyone looking to find a good "in" to forensic anthopology. It's briskly written, clear on details and an enjoyable way to spend time finding out about something new.

Whether you are an anatomy professor, a physician, or someone whose education in anatomy and forensics comes from watching CIS, House, Criminal Minds and M*A*S*H on TV, you will find this book interesting and easy to follow. Dr. Ubelaker writes in a manner that is basic enough for those with little or no formal education in the area, yet sophistocated enough for those with extensive knowledge of anatomy and forensics. All that is required to enjoy this book in an interest in the subjest area.

This really was an excellent read for anyone interested in forensic anthropology. An armchair detective's dream. Sheds light on a suject which now features prominently on our TV screen.
