Product Description

Product Description

A thrilling futuristic novel set at the end of the 22nd century. The government is cloning new people and has manufactured a 1940s wartime family who are unaware that nothing they know is real. Our hero is sent to monitor these 'Reborns' and gradually becomes aware of a horrible underlying secret. A brilliant plot twist at the end turns the book on its head. An exciting sci-fi novel which will appeal especially to boy readers, with the topical subject of cloning. This extraordinarily prophetic 80's novel, which was published in the Oxford Children's Modern Classics series in 1999, is now reissued in a smaller, mass-market paperback format.

I, too, read this book at school, after I was told Nicholas Fisk was coming to do a writer's workshop. It provoked a lot of thought from my young mind and like many other reviewers, it has stayed with me 20 years on as a landmark text. Great science fiction for kids.

i first read this way back in the 70's and, to be honest, i scared me witless for years after. maybe i was a sensitive child or something. so i came back to it a cynical adult and after the first twenty pages i was laughing at my previous fears, but then the plot really kicks in and remarkably for a thirty year old kids book it hasn't dated. without including spoilers take liberal doses of paranoia from 'the matrix' and 'the truman show'. Throw in the blitz and season with a random futuristic utopian city run by old people and boil for an afternoon. so, if you want your kids to grow up with a healthy questioning mind, get this book. if you felt like me about it, buy this book and if you've stumbled in here in error, buy this book. seminal.

Unforgettable! 29 Mar 2004
Format:Hardcover
I read this book when I was merely nine years old, I only read it once with my book club in primary school. I thought it was excellent and even though I am now twenty-five I still remember this book vividly. A must-read for anyone who likes books.
