Product Description

Product Description

The body is discovered in a disused burial ground. A young woman, ritualistically mutilated, her eyes and mouth crudely sewn shut. Her boyfriend is arrested and charged with the murder. He might have a vicious temper and a history of violence towards women, but is Michael Nell really a killer? Michael's lawyer doesn't think so. She's hired Joe Donovan to prove his alibi. Donovan's investigations lead him into the murky world of people trafficking and illegal prostitution. But when the second body shows up, he realises it's not just local gangsters he's up against - but a deranged serial killer. A killer obsessed with the city's dark history. A killer who leaves clues pointing to his twisted plan. And if Donovan and his team can't decipher those messages in time, a killer who will kill again ...

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping and chilling, 13 Feb 2007

(REAL NAME)
Bone Machine is a great read. Kept me up until four in the morning.
Intelligent and complex, not just your average serial killer thriller.
Waites writes with conviction, passion and righteous anger. And knows
how to tell a good story. I read his first Joe Donovan novel, The
Mercy Seat and loved it, but I think this is much better. He's
developing the characters in this series really well and I can't wait
for the next one. If he keeps this up it'll be one of the best crime
series currently being written in this country.

[...] The killer's motives made perfect sense and if he
want's to know why the book's called Bone Machine then just go to page
320.

2.0 out of 5 stars Biggest mystery lies in the title......, 26 Jan 2007
Good earthy, gritty writing that - although tardy in places and told in an off kilter time frame - keeps you gripped. Too much going on though. And too many characters vying for centre stage - leaving the alleged star - troubled ex journo cum angel of the north Joe Donovan - lurking in the background until the climax.

The book's marketed as a serial killer thriller - but that element is the weakest link...not wholly unsatisfying - but not the main thrust - which is a really nifty human trafficking tale. The Historian is killing women and up to some devilish scheme linked to the history of Newcastle. This scheme never really becomes clear. All ends aren't tied at the climax and to be honest - you never find out why the book's called Bone Machine....unless it's so subtle I missed it.
