Product Description
Bondi Detective is a traditional, contemporary detective series, set in and
around the Bondi police station in Sydney, Australia. The central character is
Detective Inspector Joe Charnock, a mid-fifties widower. His sidekick is
Detective Constable Jimmy Cook, in his thirties, the first native Australian to
be a made a detective in Sydney.
Charnock is a policeman who finds it difficult to keep pace with the world.
Indeed, he has all but given up on it. He now looks forward to retirement,
away from a once beloved area that has changed so much. But he won't be
retired just yet. He's too good, despite his unorthodox methods at solving
crimes. He has two older children who visit him regularly, his mothering
daughter and his wayward son, both of whom encourage him to drink less
and watch less sport.
Jimmy Cook is modern, intelligent foil to Charnock's excesses. His home
situation is less than perfect, living in inner city Sydney with his large family in a
rundown house. Charnock and Cook are "mates" in a real Australian sense,
but would never recognise the affection they have for each other.
The first case is a gift to a sports fan like Charnock. It's the murder of former
Australian cricketing great, Terry Forbes. He is found dead in his home in the
rich Sydney suburb of Vaucluse. It is a vicious attack, a knife to the chest and
the novel insertion of a cricket stump. They are dealing with a wicked killer.
