Book Description

* In the tradition of Bernard Cornwell's bestselling Sharpe Series. * The fifth novel in this powerful and vivid account of the Napoleonic campaigns - impeccably researched.

Product Description

With the forces of Austria and Russia destroyed a year earlier, Napoleon Bonaparte begins a campaign against Prussia and her powerful armies. But, for Bonaparte, this is not merely a war of conquest, it is one of revenge. In 1757, Frederick the Great's Prussian army had annihilated the French at the Battle of Rossback and Bonaparte wants vengeance for his country as well as extending his powerbase in Europe. During the summer of 1806, Alain Lausard and his men again find themselves at the forefront of the campaign but they have their own problems to contend with. A ruthless officer, determined to acquire France's most prestigious military decoration, the Legion d'honneur, is given command of Lausard's regiment. They hate each other on sight and their private feud is carried out against the greater absurdity that is war. The French gain crushing victories against Prussia at Jena and Auerstadt but Lausard and his men are constantly endangered by the fanatical officers quest for his elusive medal. A quest that ultimately threatens all their lives...

Sharpe on horseback! 14 Jan 2004
Format:Paperback
A jolly historical romp through Napoleon's wars in Germany, "Bonaparte's Avengers" is a fun, action novel, if not enormously challenging. It rolls along at a fair pace and keeps you turning pages.
If you enjoyed the "Sharpe" novels of Bernard Cornwell, you could enjoy this series too. Alain Lausard, the central character, is a French cavalryman whose home is the army, but his enemys are sometimes in French uniforms too. The characters are a little stereotyped but suit the story as it moves from fight to fliration and battle to bivowac.
The historical setting is convincing enough and the the detail will ring true with military buffs.

A GOOD READ 21 Mar 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Have read most of the Alain Lausard series now and this one is just as good as the rest. Even managed to learn a bit about history of battles, Duke of Marlborough etc along the way. A good book.

Austelitz to Jena; Disageement and defeat of Prussia 26 July 2008
By Kenneth D. Gartrell - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book is a useful, accurate and interesting story of parts of the Napoleonic story, not told in fiction elsewhere in any detail. It is a must read for anyone who wishes to have an on-the-ground view of the whole story of the Napoleonic Age. You can't tell the players without a scorecard, and no source but fiction can explore the era from the inside out.

This book begins with the end of Austerlitz, and concludes with the clearing smoke on the field at Jena. It is a sparsely explored story of the overall tales and so it wins praise just for filling a gap in the literature.

More to follow.

It is easy for a non native reader to read this book if you are familiar with Napoleonic military technical terms.
