4.0 out of 5 stars Well executed rock., 27 May 2007
By alextorres "musiclover" (Near Bristol, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
There is really nothing madly original about this album but, on the other hand, it is really rather well conceived and executed. It is a straightforward rock album, not too heavy with some lighter moments and always with plenty of melody. And, the difference that sets it apart from look-a-likies is the singer's voice, reminiscent of Laura Nyro (obviously Laura sang a very different style of music!), a very sweet yet powerful voice that really suits these songs rather well. Yes, she has the looks and the voice which will male Hydrogyn quite a good live band to see I imagine. If you're not looking for innovation but want a good, straightforward rock album, this must be a strong contender.
Overall a very worthwhile rock album!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great first cd!, 11 Jan 2007
Okay where to start...firstly this copy does not have the ''18 and Life'' on it...my cd has ''Back in Black'' by AC/DC instead, now there is only a couple of thousand of them out there with ''Back in Black'' This cd is also has Legendary producer Michael Wagener (Alice Cooper) doing his special magic. This cd is Heavy Metal and when Julie belts out her vocals, don't be surprised to hear a little Pat Benatar...now I have been listening to this legend since 1979,Julie is no clone...either becoz her vocals have more energy...she has too when you have 2 lead guitars in a band, this is not 80s metal either, this band is much better than that era... Jeff Westlake and the other guitarist Jeff Boggs play modern heavy riffs and solos, there searing guitar sound has a lot of variety, bass player Dave Moody and drummer Jerry Lawson add to the Heavy Metal thunder, now you know me...I only talk about the songs...I like...this cd opens with the song''Vesper's Song''...now I remember when I heard this for the first time...I thought...this is a gentle introduction...becoz of its ballad like start...how wrong...I was....the band come straight at you, enticing you with the glory of Heavy Metal,I love the emotion and the way this song is sung...Julie vocal range in this song lets us know, just what she can do.I also love the middle of the song with the guitars.''Blind''this is a kick ass song...I want hear this live...highly volatile and sensual all at the same time, the guitars have a rich beautiful sound to them,Julie sings her heart out on this great song.''Look Away'',Once again Julie proves she has massive power in her vocal range, the guitars are once again heavy and bloody good.''Breaking me Down'' this is a classic song...I am so impressed with the Mr Westlake and Mr Boggs...these guys are really good together, lots of melody.Julie vocals are stirring in this song.''I've Been Waiting''another song that I like alot, mostly down to the way its sung,I like the emotion and vitality in the vocals.''Confession''This is very much like an old Pat Benatar song, which is not a bad thing, look at the grammys she got for some of her songs..and remember this is Julie's first cd...I am so captivated by this song....this song makes you spellbound, every part of this song leaves me enthralled.''Back in Black''...covers are never easy to do...okay I have heard Shakira sing this....it was okay...nothing special....this is much better...the band play it like pros and Julie's vocals are crisp and clear,I would love to hear this live from the band.''Whisper'' I can't help but think of UFO when I hear this...if you are a fan like me of this band you will know UFO wrote some great ballads...this is just a classic metal song...and if record companies took time out to get away from the crap in the charts today...this song would be number 1.
I was engrossed listening to every word from Julie...and the music made the hair on my arm stand up.''Circle'' so many great songs on this cd...I love this one as well, great guitars, this is a very pleasurable this cd...also love the raspberry at the end of the song.''Book of Names'' this song has a killer guitar riff,Great lyrics as well.''Come Back To Me'' a compelling song the title says it all...Julie vocals are soft and warm.''Mutilated Mind''This song sounds like a Iron Maiden/Wild Horses song...at times,I don't like the ''effect'' on top of Julie's vocals...I don't think the song needs it...I like this song alot...hope its in there live set, becoz there is great music from the band in this song. There you have it...maybe a couple songs...I have not mentioned....but thats not to say they ain't good....theses songs are my favourites, these songs are what get a reaction from me...this is a great first cd.Its good to hear tradition coming back into Heavy Metal.
Folks switch off MTV....keep away from Pop Idol shows....get yourself a Hydrogyn cd or get yourself to concert and see and hear for yourself.Becoz there is so many songs I like on this cd...I have to give it 5 out of 5.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Album Cover Of This Millennium?, 31 Aug 2008
By Alan Burridge (Poole,, Dorset. United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Cynical Phillistines might ask "Did you see the curtains move?" whilst the Neanderthal might wonder if it's somewhere to park his 'boike?' but for me, this is one of, if not THE best album sleeve EVER.
But hey, come on, haven't we been here before to find it's just a massive scam to get the album sales hiked up, and then discover the music is crap? Well, yes, but fortuntely, now we have You Tube to look at BEFORE we buy, and if there are videos by the band in question, we can find out if our hard-earned should be parted with, or not? And whilst Julie is the lure of an enticing honey-trap, thankfully, both she and the band more than live up to the promises the picture has on offer as an invitation to 'try me and buy me.'
But there is no need to worry, as the music and musicianship is excellent, (lots of chunky riffage and superb production!), as is her voice, and the themes covered in her lyrics are interesting, and despite the cover art for 'Deadly Passions' and 'Strip 'em Blind Live' not holding a candle to the delightful invitation hinted at quite blatantly here, it is, after all, the music which counts. But sleeve art has been known to sell albums in the past, and if every red-blooded male who sees this one has the same reaction, it will sell gazillions!
Should this album justify any complaint, it is that at first it looked as if they had achieved the unthinkable and forgotten to include the song-titles, but upon microscopic investigation, (the colouring against the dark background doesn't help, either!), these can be found very discretely around the edges of the back cover. Why, we may never know, especially when they could have been Boldly placed over the illustration thereupon, which, oddly enough, is exactly the same as the front cover without Julie, or is that all part of the mind-games?
Yes, a superb album which well lives up to everything the cover art promises, but what we need now is the vinyl release for a LARGER rendition of this masterpiece in marketing!
