5.0 out of 5 stars Authentic -- and much more 13 Aug 2012
By MrsGrey
Other reviewers have commented on the authenticity of Bomber's voice in this impressive first novel by Bob Boyton. Although not personally familiar with Bomber's post-nick, alcoholic, on-the-edge world and experiences, I must agree -- it seems really authentic. (You might, like me, need the help of a specialist dictionary website for some of the language.)But it is much more than authentic. It is also really well-written and crafted in plot and character-development. The freshness of Bomber's imagery leaps from the sometimes harrowing narrative and surprises us, as his depth is revealed. Hopefully this original, gripping tale will receive the accolades it deserves. Buy and enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Authentic for a change 20 July 2012
There are a lot of books around about homelessness, but not since "Stuart - A Life Lived Backwards" have I read one which rings true. It is gritty without being melodramatic and funny without being patronising. It is also beautifully written, with every sentence weighed perfectly and some wonderful phrases and sections. Boyton has done lots of stand up and storytelling so it is not surprising that he can trabnslate this to the page. What is surprising is how the plot develops, with turns that I was not expecting but made sense in hindsight. Mark Thomas and Jeremy Hardy have both recommended this book, as has The Independent, so I feel I am in good company when I suggest you get hold of a copy. It might not change your views, but it will add to your undrestanding. And more than that, you will enjoy it. [...]

5.0 out of 5 stars A hard man with a soft and true heart 22 May 2012
By Bobbie
I raced through this in 4 days. Can't praise it enough. Gripping story, told with feeling and insight, conveyed in sparing, precise words. A hard man with a soft and true heart - you'll root for Bomber all the way. Read this book, and next time you see a big, scruffy bloke with nice eyes drinking from a can on a bench, you will feel that you know him and hope he gets his break.
