Product Description

From Amazon.com

The Indian film-soundtrack cassettes that can be had for a couple of bucks at any Indian spice shop have long been one of the best buys in prerecorded music. Despite the fact that hundreds of fresh titles are cranked out assembly-line style each year, they maintain a remarkable consistency of quality. This CD's ostensible mission is to introduce the uninitiated hipster to the sitar-, string-, and synthesizer-laden grooves that characterize the incidental music for most "Bollywood" productions. But album producer Dan "the Automator" Nakamura has heavily tampered with the original tracks, giving the songs inanely ironic new titles and even dubbing in additional drum and sitar in an effort to put his stamp on the music. Easily angered purists should steer clear; for others, it offers entertaining enough background listening. --Charley Gothic

Let's get this clear 11 Aug 2006
Format:Audio CD
If you're buying this on the strength of DJ Shadow's name go carefully. Shadow did "some drum programming" on this project at the request of Automator. Even to say he provided the beats is pushing it. This was an Automator project and Shadow has always been unhappy about it being sold on his name.

Don't get me wrong, it's a decent record, but Shadow's involvement is incredibly minimal.

3 and a half stars 5 Feb 2006
Format:Audio CD
Do not download this album. You cannot be completely sure of the accuracy of the content... But then, that goes for ANYTHING you download. So Why 3 'n' a Half stars?"

Well, whilst most tracks are excellent, some rather fantastic, and others JUST listenable, it doesn't seem to strike me as an album in itself. It seems more of a compilation TRYING to be an album. Being the owner of a lot of the originals, and generally being well-versed in what has been dubbed as ''brownsploitation'' or 70s Indian Funk, the noted artists do not seem to have had much influence on the piece as a whole or singularly - it should have been

"DJ SHADOW and DAN THE AUTOMATER present..."

rather than it being established as their own work. But then, hey, you guys don't wanna hear about that, you wanna hear about how good or bad this ''album'' is...

Highlights are Tracks 4 - 9, and 11 -14. The best? Well, sentimentality wins this battle: The Theme from DON. Brilliant film, excellent score (throughout the film), and definitely recommended if you like the more edgy, wild, funk-laden tracks on this piece.

As far as the music goes, in general: it's brilliant - but then, that's gonna be the case with Old Skool 70s Indian Funk...

Bombay Mix 30 Dec 2002
Format:Audio CD
Rolling on from where indian film music is being sampled comes an album grafted together by Dan"the man" Automator with the original compositions from the legendary Anandji & Kalyanji. Re-mastered from the dusty vinyls this album jams the avid 60-70's Brownsplotation Bollywood together like a punjabi samosa. With titles like "THE GOOD, BAD AND CHUTNEY", "FISTS OF CURRY" somehow suggests not to take this album too seriously, in fact its finger licking good!. With plenty of "hoo's" and "haa's", original film scores and themes, this album is a sure fire winner in my book and better than anything relating to "Bollywood" music at the moment. Namashkaar!
