Amazon.co.uk Review

Ostensibly a funny animated film about a dog who thinks he has superpowers, Bolt is also a movie about friendship, perseverance, and the power of believing in oneself. Everyone knows that superheroes on television are not real, but TV star super dog Bolt (John Travolta) is a canine star who was carefully raised to believe that he really possesses superpowers. In true loyal canine style, Bolt is completely devoted to his human co-star Penny (Miley Cyrus). When Penny is captured by the evil Dr. Calico (Malcolm McDowell) in their latest television episode and Bolt gets accidentally let loose in the real world, he sets off on a journey to save her. Bolt is confounded when his super powers are suddenly ineffective, but inspiration strikes and Bolt quickly discovers the mysterious, power-stealing effects of Styrofoam packing peanuts. An encounter with alley cat Mittens (Susie Essman) gives Bolt some eye-opening lessons about being a real dog in the real world, while star-struck, ball-enclosed hamster Rhino (Mark Walton) revels in the opportunity to serve as Bolt's sidekick in the quest to rescue Penny. The trio traverses the United States from waffle house to waffle house on a hysterical quest to find Penny and prove that the relationship between Penny and Bolt is real. In the end, Bolt, Mittens, and Rhino learn that everyone is special in their own way and they discover the true power of believing in oneself and one's friends. Selected cinemas showed Bolt in 3-D, but the film is probably equally enjoyable in the traditional format. A fun film with a nice message and a huge dose of cute, Bolt is good entertainment for the entire family. --Tami Horiuchi

DVD Description

From the creator of Cars and Finding Nemo, meet Disney's newest hero, Bolt and his faithful hamster sidekick Rhino, in the fully awesome comedy adventure event of the year. As the star of the biggest TV show in Hollywood, Bolt's life is filled with adventure, danger and intrigue. So when the super pup is accidentally shipped to New York City and separated from Penney, his beloved co-star and owner, Bolt immediately springs into action to save her from the forces of evil. But he's not alone. With the help of Rhino, his number one fan and loyal partner, and a crafty alley cat named Mittens, they embark on an extraordinary mission filled with high flying, action-packed stunts. Showcasing the vocal talents of John Travolta and teen sensation Miley Cyrus, this movie will have your whole family cheering for the good guys.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bolt!, 13 Jun 2009
A Kid's Review
The 1st time i went to see it with my mum i thought it was absolutly wicked! I cried twice where most people cry once. Oh its so cute! Then i went to see it with my friends and it was even better. I love Rhino the hamster, he's my favorite. Mylie C is brill as Penny even though i hate her singing and 'Hannah Montana' is the most awfull thing and not funny. But it really dousn't sound like her and she releases her inner self. My friend said it was a bit boring, but she does prefer old movies and she also suggested going to see 'The curious case of Benjamen Button'! The small but exiting adventure really shows that you should never give up on what you believe you can do. I'm 11 and thought it was awsome so i'm sure all ages and genders would love it. Disney Pixar do the most amazing job seeing as it takes 3-5 years to create a pixar movie, and they have to get the trend right seeing as trend is moving quickly through the ages, and they have to get it right other wise it looks really old.

So I think you should definitely buy this movie but if you haven't seen it, watch it on rental first. Thank you for reading this and hope it comes in useful. By Olivia May

4.0 out of 5 stars Early promise fades to mediocrity - but great toy!, 20 May 2009

(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
John Travolta's recognisable tones star alongside those of Miley Cyrus; Travolta is the eponymous canine, who believes himself to be blessed with super powers but who in reality is the unwitting start of a series of action movies alongside Zelwegger's Penny, a teenage girl. When a pair of mischievous moggies release Bolt from his trailer as a prank, he becomes lost, and embarks upon a quest to find Penny, accompanied by a sarcastic alley cat and Rhino the hamster, his number one fan.

The film opens with a blizzard of action, and sets out its stall as a riveting and thrill-laden action movie. However, once the big reveal kicks in, the film settles into a fairly entertaining but ultimately predictable formula, as Bolt finds out who he really is, experiences the pain of rejection for the first time, and eventually becomes a real hero. The best character for me was Rhino; trapped inside his ball he is all gushing admiration and optimism, and has all the best lines in the film.

The animation is as good as you'd expect from a Disney Pixar collaboration, and the film is visually accomplished and engaging. However, Travolta's voice is a little too bland to really invest the audience with any pathos regarding Bolt, whilst the humour and the concept are too often aimed above the heads of children, supposedly the film's main audience. I took my four year-old daughter to see this, and although she was riveted, she unsurprisingly didn't understand the meta-film concept, or get the ironic comments made by a group of streetwise pigeons who appear as a kind of Greek chorus throughout the film. The film was polished, but at the end of the day I thought it lacked that certain something, which could have put it up there with instant animated classics such as Toy Story, Shrek and Finding Nemo.

This release does however get an extra star for the superb plush 'Rhino the Hamster' soft toy that comes with it. Rhino is easily the best thing about the movie and it's just a shame that he doesn't come with his exercise ball!
