About the Author

Shona Main grew up in the Shetlands and at 17 moved to Dundee to train as a magazine journalist with DC Thomson & Co Ltd. After studying law, she then had a misguided and rather lacklustre foray into politics before returning to writing at the turn of the century. She writes mainly about Italy, Scotland and politics. With her partner, Nick Bruno, who is also a Footprint author, they split their time between Scotland and Italy, eating and drinking too much.

On the plus side, the textual descriptions are engagingly written and we followed the recommended eating out places, which were well informed, BUT.... the main drawback of this guide is that the maps are pretty hopeless. The main map divides the city up into squares along the traditional A1, B1 system, but fails to note the reference against any of the entries. It made the actual finding of sights or restaurants/ bars extremely hit or miss, dependent on whether you managed to spot the street name on the map or not. Plus some kind of basic map of the bus/ tram routes seems a sensible edition.

Annoying really, as it is well written.

I chose this as it was a modestly priced book and easy to carry around. Unfortunately the maps were difficult to follow and we resorted to the locally provided Tourist map. The lack of pictures meant that identifying the places was difficult too.

Most disappointed. Very little here of use. Thin on information, plenty of superfluous useless text - do we really need a recipe for ragu for example? Some misprinted sections - the Italian phrases for problems and shopping both the same, very little on the wonderful art of the region. Poor town maps as previously noted and no overall map of the area. Don't waste your money on this.

Very informative pocket guide to Bologna. It covers all the major sites and has a handy little map of the centre. I would say it is essential reading before a visit and easy to use.
