Product Description

Product Description

This is a comprehensive study of the most successful movie industry in the world, which has a very different style to its eponymous American counterpart. Including a collection of profiles of the top Bollywood stars, singers, writers, directors and producers, with previously unpublished interviews with all the key players, this is a guide to the Bollywood phenomenon.

About the Author

Nasreen Munni Kabir works as an independent television producer and director in London. Her company, Hyphen Films, has been producing Hindi cinema material and programming seasons of films for Channel 4 for over fifteen years, including the critically acclaimed series Movie Mahal and How to Make a Bollywood Movie. She is also the author of Guru Dutt: A Life in Cinema and Talking Films: Conversations on Hindi Films with Javed Akhtar.

This book is an excellent introduction to Bollywood. Highly recommended for newcomers who want expand their basic knowledge of this great national cinema. Longtime Bollywood fans probably already know most of this material, but there are numerous interviews with important actors/writer/directors that might make this a worthwhile purchase even for them.

Good Book as a Bollywood Primer 8 Aug 2002
By James I. Schumeister - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
There are several books out there about Bollywood, but some, like Vijay Mishra's " Bollywood Temple of Desire" better suited for academia than the general public. In contrast, Ms. Kabir's book is accessible to someone looking for an introduction to the world of Bollywood films. It lays out the basic components of the Hindi commercial film industry, helping you understand what Indian movie goers look for when they plunk down their hard earned rupees. The style is light, but not superficial. Snippets from well-known Bollywood players add to the fun. I can't think of a better book to start with. Later, you might want to seek out Yves Thoraval's "The Cinemas of India," which gives a more in-depth look at all of India's movie centers (there's more to Indian movies than Bollywood).
