The full title of this album is 'Bollywood Funk: 15 Funk-Fuelled Grooves from the Bollywood Classics' and it more than lives up to its title. This is a quality compilation featuring vintage sounds from Bollywood's golden years of the 60's & 70's, when whole orchestras would be crammed into studios and directed by genius composers such as Rahul Dev Burman, Laxmikant Pyarelal et al.
There are many highlights here, with the standout being the ubiquitous 'Dum Maro Dum', a beats heavy, Bollywood classic with its "Hare Krishna" chorus, sung by the equally ubiquitous Asha Bhosle. Two tracks from Burman's 'Shalimar' soundtrack, which is long overdue a CD release, feature - the title track, which definitely takes its cue from Ennio Morriconne (particularly the Edda Dell'Orso inspired vocals towards the end) - and the beautifully sung 'Baby Let's Dance Together'. At over seven minutes, 'Pyar Zindaghi Hai' is almost a Blaxplotation / Bollywood hybrid. Elsewhere some of the later 70's tracks have clearly been influenced by disco and there's the usual male / female vocal duelling going on.
Unfortunately the artists are not listed, but that's of little consequence when the music is this good - every song is a funked-up gem. Recommended.
