Review

'A wonderful introduction to the Second World War' -- Max Hastings 20070916 'Deadly daring from a vanished era! reading this book is akin to taking an extraordinary journey down memory lane, one that leads into the heart of the bloody struggle of 1941, when Britain was at war with Nazi-occupied Europe and seemingly alone in the world!what sets the book apart is the wholly understated nature of heroism. It is a story replete with true grit, self-deprecating humour, camaraderie, ingenuity, loyalty to one's country and the triumph of sheer will' -- Express 20070921

Richard Pape was an airman who served in WWII, and was a fantastic writer, to boot. Shot down over Holland, his factual account of his life as a PoW, and his daring escape attempts, moves along at a breakneck pace from page one. This true Yorkshire hero must have had balls like coconuts, as parts of his story made my hair curl, because of the privations he suffered, and the things he had to do, to survive - He was incredibly gutsy, tough, resourceful, and determined - and 150% courageous! After reading this book, I feel even more indebted to him and all the men of my father's generation who served in WWII. Read it, and be thankful that men like him fought for our freedoms in those dark days

A great survivor 4 Nov 2007
Format:Hardcover
So often survivors of war and torture are not given the glory of the dead. But this man lived under the pseudonym of another, to live under German interrogation and torture for two years. This prolonged deception certainly saved his life and others and his story is told with a cheery narrative. Others died though and this moving account is well worth the read, it is a race to read through as the thrill of his war experience unfolds. Read it.

One of those books that will make you utterly unsocial until you finish it.

The author is shot down over Germany in ww2 and this book follows his frankly, quite incredible, attempts to escape from captivity. This is a book from the old days....the good guys have names like "stinker" and "the turk" and the bad guys wear leather coats and are slightly effeminate (whilst they beat the hero to a pulp!). The book is incredibly well written and truly inspiring....without spoiling anything he faces the most demoralising setbacks and frustrations at the gates of victory....that he claws his way back again and again is astounding.

Enjoy, but clear your diary out for a day or two beforehand !
