Product Description

Review

'Paytress is a literate and analytical writer and this is the best biography produced on Bolan so far. There are revealing interviews from a wide circle of acquaintances, dead and alive, revealing everything you need to know about the elfin one, his mind, his music and his mentors.' MOJO 'Paytress contextualises Bolan with more detail and more breadth than any other book. Even if you have the 1992 book, get this new one. It's a significantly longer and more detailed volume, with many new photos, an updated discography, and new input from two important players in Bolan's life - his partner Gloria Jones and his personmal assistant Mick Gray. There is also a worthwhile 'whatever happenend to' section, which reveals what became of many of the people mentioned throughout...To his credit, Paytress achieves a good balance, refusing to along with the simple-minded cynicism of former manager Simon Napier Bell and Pete Jenner...it's a fascinating read, and indispensible for anyone interested in one of the true characters of English rock music.' RECORD COLLECTOR --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Review

In the best Bolan biography yet, Paytress writes thoughtfully and perceptively. Q Though Paytress is very good on Bolan's rise and fall, he is absolutely brilliant on the seismic tremors of youth culture. Tony Parsons.

A Bolan feast! 4 Sep 2002
Format:Paperback
This is an outstanding biography by an acknowledged Bolan expert. It has all the ingredients of a good biography (importantly being a 'good read') with paytress' attention to Bolanic detail of particular merit.

If you bought the first edition of this book back in 92/3 and fear you would only be purchasing the same book repackaged then think again!! I have both editions and i promise you that this is a very seperate beast! This is a much expanded and re-worded version with all the photographs being new to this edition. The only similarities i can identify are the quality of the writing and the author's love of his subject.

If you have any interest in Bolan or the work of the great man at all then you need this book. It sits nicely on the shelf alongside Buckley's Bowie biography and Rogan's seminal work on Morrissey and Marr. It truly is great!!

Very readable, very thorough. Possibly the definitive text on Marc's life & music. An absolutely brilliant effort which describes every stage of Marc's life. It is a very fair book, it may be "warts & all" but unlike some who have written about Marc, the author does not "over do" the negative side of Marc's character (or over play the period of downturn in musical fortune he suffered).

A brilliant book & a real must for every Bolan fan - top notch.

"`BOLAN' The Rise and Fall of a 20TH Century Superstar" is everything you would want/need to know in a biography of Marc Bolan apart from actually having known the man himself. It is extremely well researched from the beginnings right through until the end. The writing style is engaging, not only informing, but also frequently detailed with everyday expositions. It is a `lumpy' book, however, be prepared because when you begin to read it becomes difficult to break away. The book also explores details of Bolan's efforts to break into the American markets; and also the complicated web he spun in order to protect his business interests. With hindsight however, it is glaringly obvious that an artistic talent as unique as Bolan's would fail to be a part of the global mainstream of American popular culture. The eccentrically Englishness of Marc Bolan himself, this uniqueness reflects in what he did and this is what appealed to the audience and fans at home in England, particularly pre-1972. His music began to change after `Electric Warrior' and `The Slider'. The Mystic had either lost or had chosen to give away his mystique, but that is purely my own view. By 1977 his music and everything else had all changed significantly. This is an excellently well written and well researched book.
