Book Description

In her debut novel, Veronika Carnaby picks up where the Beat Generation left off. Set in 1960, Bohemia chronicles a group of twenty-somethings who defy the "ideals" of a mid-twentieth century society to seek creative fulfillment. In the process, they spotlight the creative path that artists of all mediums tread, all the while depicting the challenges faced by youth in the decade that changed the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars bohemia 18 Nov 2012

I enjoyed this book a lot. What appealed to me was the way in which the story is narrated by the main character, Valerie. It feels as though you are sitting back relaxing and listening to an interesting lady bringing you through her life story and recollections of a time gone by. Veronika Carnaby has captured this style beautifully with her writing and you really wish that Valerie gets to follow her dream.
The Author has written a really interesting and pacy story about this group of twenty something adventure seekers who are growing as characters as the story develops. As they move from place to place changing within themselves and living a life without ties Valerie makes her move to become the person she wants to become and you close the book really rooting for her.

3.0 out of 5 stars A debut with much promise 17 Oct 2012
By Nicki J
Format:Paperback
This is an interesting beat generation-type story of a group of young people living a bohemian existence. I found the prose to be very solid and I thought the author expressed a unique voice.

I found myself becoming involved with the main character, wanting to know where life would take her, and by the end of the book I was satisfied with how things had worked out. Though this book did hold my interest and was well-written, for me it lacked that excitement, that spark that would make me give it four or five stars. I enjoyed it, but I wasn't blown away.

However, this is a debut piece and I feel the author definitely has talent and can build on any critiques of this book when writing her next work.

I received this book as a free review copy from the author.
