Format: Hardcover
Well written and interesting history of an important manufacturer of aircraft. Starts right from the first aircraft through to the modern Boeing 747-400. Good sections on the wartime B17 and B29.

Mainly for the enthusiast or people who need to know.

There are many tables of individual aircraft histories.

A little out of date now, but I am happy to add it to my collection of the superb Putnam titles in my collection.

Valuable resource 23 Jun. 2011
By J. boyle - Published on Amazon.com
This book lives up to the high standards of the famous UK-based Putnam aeronautical series of the 60s-80s.
Peter M. Bowers was America's leading aircraft historian and enthuiast. (He even designed a popular homebuilt aircraft in addition to his writing and photograpy efforts)
He was an engineer at Boeing for decades and brings his first hand knowledge...and access to their files...to this book along with photos from his amazing personal collection of avaition photos.

Unlike many other Boeing-themed books out there, Bowers gives you chapters on what was going on at the firm (examples being sections on pre-war, WWII, and postwar operations along with the decision to get into the jetliner race) as well as detailed chapters on specific aircraft types.
Those sections are backed up with quality three-view drawings, statistics and constructor/serial numbers and registrations.
In short, everything is here.

As you'll note from the copyright date, the book ends after the introduction of the 757 and 767 series, so you won't find details on the 777 series or the upcoming 787.
Sadly Mr. Bowers has passed away, but I hope the publisher can find an author to revise and update this book in the future.

A very good history of Boeing Aircraft up to the mis 80's. Lots of detail on aircraft and aircraft production. A very good reference work for those interested in the history of aircraft.
